Rey Mysterio faced off against fellow LWO member Santos Escobar on this week’s SmackDown. This match was built as a mentor versus student battle for the opportunity to face Austin Theory for the United States Championship. However, the match saw an unfortunate moment when Mysterio suffered an injury, and the match was abruptly stopped.
During the match, Santos Escobar hit a suicide dive on his protégé, which was shown as the moment during which the legendary luchador suffered the injury. Rey Mysterio was immediately checked by officials and declared medically unable to compete further. Therefore, Escobar gained the victory and earned a title shot at SummerSlam.
The WWE Universe has been wondering whether the injury was legitimate or if it was part of a storyline. Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported that the Hall of Famer’s injury was not part of the storyline angle. It said that Santos Escobar was supposed to get a clean victory over his idol.
Furthermore, a backstage segment that was meant to follow up on the match ended up getting cancelled. As of right now, there is no official confirmation from the WWE on the severity of the injury. Fans will be hoping to see the WWE legend recover soon and come back stronger than before.
After the match, the two superstars shared an emotional moment as they embraced each other. Escobar will now focus on bringing the United States Championship to the LWO. The faction has been one of the hottest things on the main roster lately. Furthermore, merchandise sales of the group’s items have generated massive revenue.
Should Santos Escobar beat Austin Theory for the US Title?

Austin Theory has held the United States Championship for 245 days and counting. His run has been perceived as underwhelming by fans and critics alike. For someone who has beaten John Cena at WrestleMania, Theory could not capitalize on it. Moreover, he was booked in lackluster feuds.
The WWE Universe believes that LA Knight should be the one to dethrone the 25-year-old. However, backstage officials don’t seem keen on this idea. Even though The Megastar was the favorite in many people’s eyes in the recent United States Title Invitational, he ended up losing in the first match.
According to various reports, Santos Escobar is heading towards a massive push and might be the one to finally beat Austin Theory. The LWO star beat his mentor, Rey Mysterio, to become the No. 1 contender on the recent SmackDown episode. He has an incredible opportunity to win the US title, which will catapult his career.
Meanwhile, Austin Theory can focus on building his character from scratch. WWE might repackage him and hand him his NXT persona, which might be a fresh start for the 25-year-old.
