Eddie Guerrero was one of the greatest wrestlers to have ever set foot in the squared circle. His death in 2005 has left such a void that no one can fill it. Being a second-generation wrestler, wrestling ran through his blood. The Guerrero family, being one of the most prominent wrestling families, has produced countless wrestlers, but none became as globally-cherished as Eddie.
Guerrero was one of the many wrestlers responsible for the rise of WCW’s cruiserweight division. During his matches with Rey Mysterio, Chris Jericho, and Dean Malenko, he displayed his technical prowess, and some matches made their place in one of the finest WCW matchups ever.
While Eddie Guerrero made a name in the Cruiserweight Division in WCW, he changed the narrative with his WWE run. Eddie’s antics were unlike any other, but babyface Eddie was in a league of its own. And when we talk about babyface Eddie Guerrero, his battles against JBL, Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar come to light.
Speaking of Angle, Eddie and the Olympic Gold Medalist once got into a heated argument backstage which turned into a fight fight. During a conversation with Michael Morales in 2021, Kurt Angle revealed that he, Luther Reigns, and Mark Jindrak struck Eddie, which wasn’t related to the match earlier in the match.
Eddie Guerrero stormed backstage after the match, incensed, and demanded to know why Angle was stiffing him. Angle said that he told Guerrero that he didn’t hit him, but Guerrero shoved him, and the two started fighting. He claimed that at one point; he got Guerrero in the Facelock and choked him. Big Show was at the scene, and he broke up the fight.
“It was me, Jindrak and Luther Reigns. We were in the ring and we had to get heat on Eddie at the end of the night…… ‘What the hell you guys stiffing me for? You hit me for real’. And I said: ‘I didn’t touch you’. And he said. Yes, you did. I said: ‘no, these guys did’. And Eddie was so mad. He pushed me. I pushed him back. And then he went to double leg me……I sprouted got him in a Front FaceLock and started choking him out and Big Show was there and he broke it up.”
Kurt Angle says Eddie Guerrero is to blame for his own death
In August of this year, Angle discussed how Eddie Guerrero was accountable for his own demise during an appearance on Café de Renee. He said that Eddie was to be held accountable for his death and WWE wasn’t to blame. Guerrero knew what was wrong with him, according to the WWE Hall of Famer, and if he had looked into it, he may have still been alive today.
“You can’t blame it on the WWE, Eddie needs to take the blame because he knew something was wrong with himself……didn’t wanna take the extra time to find out if something was wrong with him, and I think he should have. He would be alive today if he would have done that.”
The Lumberjack match between Eddie Guerrero and Kurt Angle, which took place on the September 7th edition of SmackDown in 2004, was one match where Eddie showed signs of his heart condition. It was also one of the last matches between Guerrero and Angle, as Guerrero passed away the following year. Eddie’s legacy will live forever.
