WWE is always known for experimenting with superstars’ gimmicks. Time and again, the company came up with newfangled ideas for the characters of the talents. One such superstar that WWE experimented with was Fandango. In a recent interview, Johnny Curtis, a.k.a. Fandango, revealed the genesis of his flamboyant ballroom dancer character.
Fandango was one of those superstars who enthralled fans with his gimmick. He made his debut on SmackDown in March 2013 with his flamboyant ballroom dancer character, leaving the fans startled. However, in an interview with WrestlingNewsCo, he revealed that it wasn’t the initial plan for the character’s dance style.
Johnny Curtis revealed that WWE had plans to make Tyler Reks and Curt Hawkins male strippers before eventually releasing Reks. Following Reks’ release, he said that Curt Hawkins had approached him to be his partner to fill Reks’ void. Moreover, Fandango added that the progression of the idea had already started to continue within the creative process. As a result, WWE sent him to a strip joint in Tempa to get some lessons for his character.
The former WWE superstar said that, however, the idea of his “male stripper” character dissolved midway. He revealed that Triple H came to him one day and said he wouldn’t be playing that character anymore. “Then one day at Full Sail, Triple H pulls me aside and goes, ‘No more strip dance school. Take ballroom dancing classes now.'” Fandango said.
WWE had a change in plans regarding Fandango’s “male stripper” character. The company decided to give him the gimmick of a flamboyant ballroom dancer. Moreover, the 39-year-old revealed that WWE sent him to Arthur Murray’s dance school once a week to polish his dancing skills. However, the WWE Universe loved the unique character of Fandango and showed amazing support for him.
