Even though Iyo Sky‘s title reign began when she cashed-in her Money in the Bank contract at SummerSlam, this was her year. For a woman who almost left WWE for Stardom, reaching the zenith of SmackDown’s women’s division wasn’t like shooting a fish in the barrel. Even before winning her first major title in WWE, she was casually putting on bangers, with her wrestling clinic against Bianca Belair at Backlash being the standout.

As 2023 jettisons off its remaining baggage, Iyo Sky has unlocked a major achievement. She’ll finish the year having wrestled almost 80 televised matches, the highest for a woman in WWE this year. But there’s no rest for the weary, as The Genius of the Sky has a massive showdown lined up for January 5. On the said date, she’ll defend her SmackDown Women’s Championship against Michin.

Last Friday on SmackDown, the female OC member pinned Iyo Sky to earn the victory for her side in an 8-woman Holiday Havoc tag team match. It has to be said that Mia Yim awaits the biggest opportunity of her WWE career next Friday in Canada. Both Sky and Michin have been familiar foes, with NXT being their meeting point in the past. They’ll run it back for the title on SmackDown: New Year’s Revolution.

If things go the way Iyo Sky would love, she’ll enter WrestleMania 40 as the champion. But her opponent at the grandest stage of them all might be someone from her own group, Damage CTRL. It’s been heavily rumored that a betrayal from either side would see Iyo Sky take on her current stablemate Bayley at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

WWE Universe draws comparison between Rhea Ripley and Iyo Sky’s title reign

Iyo Sky’s eventful year had to be aligned with her Raw counterpart, Rhea Ripley. The latter has had far fewer in-ring appearances than The Genius of the Sky. It has made some fans quarrel over who among the two had a better 2023.

While most of the reactions were in favor of Iyo, a few said that she got carried on occasions by Bayley. A post even highlighted how Sky’s triumphant run would lure more Joshi prospects to jump ship to WWE.

Some fans termed Iyo Sky as the workhorse of WWE, which is not startling at all. A handful of unfavorable reactions for the ex-Stardom wrestler evince that despite Sky’s in-ring prowess, Rhea Ripley pips her in other departments.
