In the past few years, WWE has been trying to incorporate representation of the LGBTQ community into some of its storylines. Such was the case with Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose, who were supposed to be involved in a storyline where they would kiss in the middle of the ring. But unfortunately, it didn’t come to fruition.

Former WWE superstar Mandy Rose was released from the company in December last year. But before her release, she was one of the top superstars of the women’s division in WWE. She was the NXT Women’s Champion with a reign of 413 days. As recently revealed, while on the main roster, Mandy was supposed to be a part of a storyline that embraced the LGBTQ community. However, those plans were scrapped before fans got to witness it.

Speaking with Jeremy Lambert and Joel Pearl on In The Weeds, former WWE writer Dave Schilling revealed that she was supposed to win the women’s championship. And as part of the post-match celebration, she and Sonya Deville were supposed to kiss in the middle of the ring. Rose said the following about the scrapped storyline:

“On TV, the Mandy Rose, Sonya Deville storyline. That was supposed to culminate in a romance between Sonya and Mandy at WrestleMania 35 where it was a triple threat for the SmackDown Women’s Championship and Mandy was going to win because Sonya would lay down for her and they would embrace and kiss in the middle of the ring.”

Schilling further added that, at that time, he thought it was a great idea because it was a representation. Apparently, Stephanie McMahon consulted GLAAD about the lesbian angle, asking if it was okay for them to represent queer people in America. Schilling revealed that he reminded the officials that at WrestleMania, the entirety of the WWE Universe would be rooting for Asuka.

The Empress of Tomorrow is a fan favorite. Even if WWE turned her heel, she would still get the loudest reaction. Keeping that in mind, if WWE had Mandy Rose win and later had her kiss Deville as a celebration, they would be booed out of the building.

The storyline was eventually scrapped as WWE decided to put the belt on Charlotte Flair instead. Dave Schilling thinks that it was for the best that the storyline was canceled, despite the good intentions. Vince McMahon sometimes makes last-minute changes to certain storylines. Not including this storyline might have been beneficial for WWE.

Mandy Rose was one of the most prominent superstars of WWE and the face of NXT. So why was she let go from the company in such an abrupt manner? The reason turned out to be quite controversial.

Mandy Rose’s reign as the NXT Women’s Champion was brought to an abrupt end. Following her loss to Roxanne Perez, it was reported that she has been released from the company. WWE released The Golden Goddess due to her uploading explicit pictures of herself on her FanTime page. It was apparently considered outside of WWE’s moral code. Since then, Mandy Rose hopes that Triple H would hire her back sometime soon. Fans hope to see her return to wrestling soon as well.
