Gable Steveson signed with WWE in the summer of 2021. He became the second Olympic wrestling gold medalist to be acquired by the company after the legendary Kurt Angle. There were high hopes for the athlete to follow in the footsteps of Angle, as Steveson’s dream was always to become a WWE superstar.
After almost exactly two years, the 23-year-old appeared on the NXT brand during the July 25 episode. Before revealing where his future lies, he was interrupted by Baron Corbin. The Lone Wolf warned the gold medalist and told him he was “swimming with sharks,” as he felt that Steveson didn’t belong in WWE. As a result, Gable Steveson challenged Corbin to a match at Sunday’s Great American Bash event.
The Olympic gold medalist then hit the former United States Champion with a couple of suplexes before they were separated by security. The match was then made official, marking the date of the anticipated in-ring debut of the two-time gold medalist. It was also seemingly confirmed by Gable Steveson that he will stay in NXT for the foreseeable future.
Gable Steveson was initially set to make his first in-ring appearance against Triple H at WrestleMania 38. This was before the legend suffered a cardiac event and was forced to retire. As a result, Steveson ended up confronting Chad Gable after the latter’s match at the Showcase Of Immortals. Due to college wrestling commitments, the athlete made only sporadic appearances in the WWE.
When Gable Steveson appeared alongside Kurt Angle in WWE?
A lot of similarities can be drawn between Gable Steveson and Kurt Angle. The most notable ones are Olympic wrestling gold medalists and are signed by the WWE. So, it can be a jarring experience to see both men together on screen. This is exactly what happened during the December 9th edition of Friday Night SmackDown.
In what was a special episode of the show celebrating the WWE Hall Of Famer’s birthday, Steveson would stay with Angle throughout the show. Both men appeared in plenty of backstage segments, interacting with the likes of Braun Strowman and the legend’s on-screen son, Jason Jordan. Throughout the night, the Alpha Academy would try to sneak into the party going on behind the screen.
Later that night, the former tag team champions tried to celebrate in the ring as they brought out a cake. Kurt Angle interrupted them and brought out a milk truck. Along with Gable Steveson, they recreated the Attitude Era segment as Angle sprayed the Alpha Academy with milk. It was a joyful thing to watch for the audience, as it brought back memories from the past.
