Gunther in WWE
Gunther is one of the most dominant superstars in WWE today. Since his WWE debut as part of NXT UK in 2019, the ‘Ring General’ has been merciless to his opponents. Currently, he prides himself on being the Intercontinental Championship and aims to restore its lost glory. And if one sees the title defenses in recent weeks, one would agree that he is doing just that!
Gunther has a very impressive resume. Having made his debut in 2005, the former NXT UK Champion has wrestled for the most notable promotions in Europe. Add to it, American promotions such as PWG and now, WWE. Although, there has been one common factor everywhere he’s stepped foot, and that is total domination.
However, the domination went out of the window on the night of Survivor Series 2019, as Gunther joined forces with Team NXT in the traditional 5 on 5 match versus Team Raw and SmackDown.
Fans expected an impressive showdown but were actually met with a lackluster showing. To add to the frustration, he was the first man eliminated by Drew McIntyre.
Many criticised Gunther’s booking in the match as he was the NXT UK Champion then, and certainly didn’t deserve the treatment.
During a recent interview with Steve Fall of Ten Count, Gunther spoke about the elimination match. He stated he doesn’t think it was a deterrent to his momentum. In fact, he feels it made him more popular as the incident garnered major social media buzz. He stated he was totally fine with it and it was a humbling experience for him.
The ‘Ring General’ said, “I don’t think it was negative… When I started doing my bit in that match and then getting eliminated early, I think that did something to me……I think no harm was done and everybody needs to take a humbling experience here and there. So, I’m totally fine with it.”

Gunther addresses potential match with John Cena at WrestleMania 39
![John Cena and Gunther](https://media.firstsportz.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/10224010/Adobe_Express_20221110_2222510_1-1024x576.jpg)
WrestleMania 39 is expected to mark John Cena’s return to WWE. Although there is no confirmation yet, the WWE Universe has begun speculating. Moreover, they are picking favorites to face Cena at WrestleMania 39, with Kurt Angle, Edge, and Randy Orton as proposed opponents.
Gunther discussed the potential match with Cena in the same interview with Steve Fall. He said he doesn’t know if the match would happen or not, but expressed desire to wrestle John Cena.
“John Cena is one of the legends. Because he’s not really active at the moment anymore, he just pops up, but when he does, if the chance is there for me, I’ll gladly take it. One of, if not the most popular babyface in this sport of all time. I think I would be a great counterpart to that.” said the 35-year-old WWE Superstar.
Gunther vs John Cena would definitely be a banger of a match. Gunther is a legit heel, and John Cena is the legit babyface. The writing is on the wall, and if WWE goes ahead with this match, it truly would steal the thunder from any other match. Even if there The Rock vs Roman Reigns on the card.
