LATEST REPORT: Injured wrestling star Io Shirai planning a move to Japan, leaving WWE midway through her career

Shirai

There’s been loud buzz surrounding reports involving Io Shirai. The 32-year-old WWE NXT Superstar hasn’t performed too many times ever since she was sidelined due to an injury. The last time she competed was in the NXT Women’s Championship. There she lost her Fatal 4-Way contest. It seems that defeat has put a toll on her confidence.

As a result, the Japanese star didn’t feature in the developmental brand’s roster. Now, the latest reports came in that Io Shirai would leave the organization soon enough. Or at least that’s what Mr. Dave Meltzer had to say in his Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

As a matter of fact, Meltzer mentioned that Shirai has yet to sign a new contract extension offer from the wrestling organization. Io Shirai’s current WWE contract expires this coming August. Post that date, the Japanese would turn into a free agency. Who knows she might join AEW next, right? Well, that’s not something that Io Shirai plans to do.

It has been revealed that the star has spoke to people close to her. She said that once her WWE contract expires the very next month, she might return to her family. In this regard, Shirai’s family lives in Japan.

Is Io Shirai’s farewell similar to Kairi Sane’s?

Meanwhile, as reports regarding Io Shirai’s WWE retirement are flowing in, the WWE Universe has started building theories and making comparisons. One such comparison that the audience drew is of Kairi Sane’s farewell.

If we travel back in time, in 2020, superstar Kairi Sane quit the WWE midway through her contract. And she went to Japan where she agreed to work as a brand ambassador for the wrestling entertainment organization.

But we think such comparisons are unnecessary because Io Shirai didn’t violate her contract agreement. If she decides to leave the US and return to her home country, that’s completely fine. Her contract expires soon and that would instantly make her a “free agent” and free of obligations. Nevertheless, Io Shirai is just 32. So, she is retiring from wrestling a bit too early, it seems.

We have to see if WWE decides to extend her contract. We believe it all shall be revealed within the next couple of weeks.
