Iyo Sky at NXT

Iyo Sky has established herself as one of the prominent figures in the WWE. Sky is one of the female wrestlers who possess an incredible high-flying ability supported by a strong technical ability, with Dave Meltzer calling her as one of the best wrestlers in the world in 2016. Though Iyo Sky has decent mic skills she has the ability to play babyface and a heel effortlessly. Sky joined WWE in 2017 and made her in ring debut on NXT Brand in 2018. She won the NXT Women’s Championship in 2020 at NXT TakeOver: In Your House by defeating Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley in a triple threat match.

Iyo Sky held the Championship for almost a year before being defeated by Raquel Gonzalez at NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver. Thereafter she teamed with Zoey Stark and defeated The Way to win the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship. Their reign lasted for 111 days as they were defeated by Toxic Attraction at Halloween Havoc in 2021. In April 2022, Iyo Sky faced Cora Jade, Mandy Rose(c), and Kay Lee Ray for the NXT Women’s Championship but failed to win the match, and was out of action due to an injury occurred during the match. Dakota Kai, who also returned at the SummerSlam along with Bayley and Iyo Sky is now a part of the faction “DAMAGE CTRL” with Bayley and Iyo Sky. The stable has been viewed as a villainous one and the three ladies are set to face Bianca Belair, Asuka and Alexa Bliss in six women tag match at the Clash at the Castle Live event.

Dakota Kai recently appeared on WWE‘s The Bump, where she said that Bayley and herself have wanted to do the faction thing for a long time, and it wasn’t an idea that came to them suddenly. Kai added that the fact that the faction thing transpired under Bayley’s supervision is fantastic since Bayley has been excellent and a tremendous visionary. Kai also mentioned her other colleague Iyo Sky, saying that she and Iyo have known each other for a long time and that Sky is one of the finest in the world, so being alongside these two ladies is a dream for her.

Recently Iyo Sky gave an interview to Tokyo Sports, where she spoke about her injury and even revealed of quitting WWE at one point. Sky who went by the name Io Shirai in the past has revealed about her name change to Iyo Sky. She stated that Shirai is conveyed in Kanji to Japanese people but that not being the case in USA, she thought of replacing it to Sky.

“I think that the image of the former ‘Shirai’ is conveyed in kanji to Japanese people, but that’s not the case in the United States. I think it’s a good name because the image is conveyed by adding ‘Sky’ there. Some people misread it because it looked like a lowercase letter L and O (lo), or it looked like a number. I think it became easier to understand with ‘IYO’ in all capital letters.”

Sky and Kai have been competing in the Women’s Tag Team Tournament and have reached the finals of the tournament, where they will face Aliyah and Raquel Rodriguez.
