After this week’s SmackDown went off-air, Edge broke millions of hearts. He announced that he had wrestled his last WWE match in Toronto, quite possibly as a whole. That said, the Rated-R superstar revealed he isn’t sure what the future holds for him. Edge joked that he’d need to sit around with his family to discuss what’s next for him. Just when he was having a moment of peace with his family in Toronto, The Imperium crashed his party.
However, the Europeans couldn’t assert their dominance as Drew McIntyre, Sami Zayn and a returning Kevin Owens came to Edge’s aid. This was Owens’ first WWE appearance, though untelevised, since he was written off on Raw a few weeks ago. The babyfaces marched towards Imperium and they eventually had a 6-man tag team match. Owens, Zayn and McIntyre picked up the win over the Gunther-led stable.
After the dark match, the winning side celebrated its victory with Edge as the sold-out crowd escorted the arena with smiles on their faces. Of course, no one was thrilled, to say the least, after hearing the Rated-R Superstar’s farewell-esqued speech. However, the time had come for Edge to finally bow out. That said, his future remains uncertain following his triumph against Sheamus in Edge’s last contracted WWE match.
There are ongoing rumors about Edge’s AEW debut at All In next weekend. Just to mention, the Master Manipulator had talks with the Tony Khan-led promotion back in 2019. Eventually, he decided to go with WWE. But Edge’s WWE contract has now expired. Unless he decides to sign an extension, he’s done with them forever. There’s no concrete evidence that he’ll jump ship to AEW in order to finish his career with his best friend, Christian.
WWE did a fantastic job with Edge’s 25th Anniversary special
This week’s SmackDown episode was completely dedicated to Edge. WWE went all-out to commemorate 25 years of The Rated-R Superstar’s prodigious career. Throughout the show, they ran multiple video packages, highlighting some of the best moments of his career. Moreover, numerous legends, including John Cena, Dave Bautista, Randy Orton, etc., discussed Edge’s irreplaceable impact on this business.
Prior to the show, WWE surprised Edge by bestowing custom championship belts on The Ultimate Opportunist. Also, they released 25 limited edition T-shirts on the WWE Shop, each having Edge’s autograph over it. Fans too turned up in numbers to potentially see their favorite compete for the last time inside a WWE ring. If that’s the case, Edge’s showdown against ‘The Demon’ Finn Balor at WrestleMania 39 would remain his last WWE PLE match ever.
