“The door is not closed,” Maria Kanellis hopeful for a return to WWE someday
Maria Kanellis is hopeful to join WWE in the future again (via ROH)
Maria Kanellis-Bennett had made a name for herself in WWE at a time when there were not many opportunities for women. The women’s wrestling division was not given the same attention as men’s wrestling in the Divas era. The former Divas search contestant started her wrestling career in WWE in 2004 and is currently contracted to AEW.
Kanellis and her husband Mike Bennett are part of a faction in AEW alongside Matt Taven called “The Kingdom”. Although she is signed with AEW currently, she revealed via Twitter that she is still open to a return to WWE in the future. She tagged both AEW and WWE in the same tweet writing, “I’m happy where I am and I’m excited for the future in @AEW . The door is not closed for @wwe someday but for now, I’m exactly where I’m meant to be in @AEW.”
Maria Kanellis’ last match in WWE was in 2019. It was a mixed tag team match where she teamed up with her husband Mike to go against Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch on Raw. Incidentally, she has not wrestled any other matches in other promotions since then. After getting released Kanellis and Bennett had brief runs in Ring of Honor and Impact Wrestling before settling at their current position in AEW.
Maria Kanellis’ pro-wrestling career
The current AEW star was initially part of WWE Diva Search in 2004. She was hired by the company even when she placed fifth in the contest. Kanellis was part of some on-screen relationships in WWE while also pursuing the women’s championship. Her chase remained incomplete though as she never held the major women’s title in the company. Maria Kanellis was released in 2010 after her last appearance at the Royal Rumble.
Kanellis soon became one of the few women’s wrestlers who wrestled for every major promotion in the United States. Her major run was in ROH with her then-boyfriend Mike Bennett, whom she married in 2014. She was also part of TNA where she won the Knockouts title in 2016. She held the title for a couple of months before losing it to Gail Kim.
During this period she also appeared in FWE, Chikara, and NJPW before making her return to WWE in 2017. Throughout her second WWE run, she has only made appearances on TV with her husband Mike Bennett, both being involved in a few comic skits sporadically. She briefly held the 24/7 title in 2019 while being pregnant on screen. Soon after she was released again from the company in 2020. Currently, The Kingdom is not a prominent faction in AEW but Maria has a vision for women’s wrestling which she has mentioned a few times in her recent interviews.
