It’s true that there has been a huge paradigm shift in the industry when it comes to women’s wrestling. in WWE. Without a doubt, women’s wrestling around the world has seen massive growth over the decade.
From earlier being used only as eye-candies to get in viewers, female athletes are now given proper screen time with their independent storylines. Not only in WWE but there’s a massive female talent across the globe when it comes to professional wrestling and in no way they are less than any of the other talents on the roster.
As compared to other Eras of WWE, the women’s revolution started around late 2014, when the main event of WrestleMania 35 was kept as an all-woman match between Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey.
The second historic moment came when the company introduced an all women PLE in 2018, EVOLUTION, which is considered a landmark in the pro wrestling industry. Thus, there have been considerable attempts to revolutionize women’s wrestling.
Former WWE Diva Melina reveals They were punished for doing something Extraordinary
But, it is also a fact that even after these changes, there’s a lot left to improve, and this is what Former WWE Divas Champion Melina feels. Melina recently joined WrestlePurists for an interview in which she talked about the evolution of women’s wrestling.
Melina stressed on the fact that she is happy to see the growth that has taken place in the last decade, but she still thinks that it needs to grow at a much faster pace. She feels that there is still some kind of “toxicity” in the roster, which needs to be addressed.
She further told how they were used to be punished back in the day if they did something extraordinary. She meant that if someone from the Divas would do something which would highlight them, they were then punished by Vince McMahon and were put in gimmick matches in the upcoming weeks.
“Our punishment was, ‘Hey, here’s a lingerie match right after you did something extraordinary,’ or here’s like, I don’t know, a swimsuit match. They would do stuff like that to kind of see what we’d do. It’s like okay, what are they gonna throw at us at this point?”
Melina said that basically WWE would want to check how they would react to being thrown in gimmick matches. She said that they just waited for the upcoming weeks that exactly what they would have to do. Melina was last seen in a WWE ring at Royal Rumble 2022 where she entered as the surprise entrant on no. 2.
