Just when Mercedes Mone and her World Tour was in full-swing, she picked up an injury. Last night at the Walter Pyramid in California, NJPW held it’s pay-per-view known as Resurgence. The main-event saw the crowning of an inaugural NJPW Strong Women’s Champion. Before that, two semi-final matches were also held on the same night.
In the first matchup, Mercedes Mone defeated Stephanie Vaquer. Following up, Willow Nightingale got past her opponent Momo Kohgo. After advancing to the finals of this tournament, Nightingale and Mone earned the honor to close the night. Worth noting, the former Sasha Banks was the clear fan favorite throughout the night.
When it finally came down to the main-event, both superstars wrestled a clinic. It would’ve been remembered as one of the best women matches in NJPW record books, had Mone’s leg received a safe landing. The talked about spot came when Willow and Mercedes were perched on the ropes. The Blueprint attempted to put her opponent’s face on the steel ring post.
In the process, Mone seemingly got off-balance and fell downwards with an abrupt landing. It was that exact spot which banged up her leg. Following this, The Boss was seen hopping around on single leg unable to execute any offense. After multiple powerbomb attempts, Nightingale finally got one to put Mone grounded on the mat for the pin. And with that, the New Japan Pro-Wrestling crowned a new champion.
How seriously that injury can affect Mercedes Mone?
Fans in attendance posted some videos on Twitter after Resurgence went off-air. In the shared footage, Mercedes Mone received medical aid. She was carried out of the arena by external help. A fan noted that judging by the looks, Mercedes seems to have legitimately hurt herself in a bad way.
One can only hope that it’s just an on the spot thing and doesn’t puts prolonged effect on Mone. Well, not just in NJPW, injuries seem to clutch women’s division in WWE too. As noted, Liv Morgan and Dakota Kai are also in the outskirts after picking up respective injuries this past week.
With the Forbidden Door pay-per-view coming up, there were strong hopes of having Mercedes Mone in a top spot. However, if the worst has already happened, the injury might prevent the former WWE Women’s Champion off the card in Toronto. Mone is currently being evaluated backstage and severity of her injury will be determined after a short examination only.
