WWE released Mustafa Ali from his contract on September 21. His departure was arguably shocking, to say the least, as he was a prominent feature on NXT. A match between The Disrupter and Dominik Mysterio for No Mercy was announced a few days before his release. Recently, Fightful shed light on the behind-the-scenes reaction to the entire fiasco.
As per the source, several people in NXT were unhappy with Mustafa Ali’s abrupt departure and the news has created a pandemonium backstage. Furthermore, a lack of communication between WWE and NXT frustrated the officials. The higher-ups on the Gold brand are supposedly disheartened, as they have set creative plans for the 37-year-old going into 2024.
During the No Mercy media call, Shawn Michaels addressed the decision to fire Mustafa Ali. The Hall of Famer claimed that he found out about his release just before Ali did. In addition to that, it took HBK by “surprise” when they made the announcement. The WWE legend subtly hinted that he had no input in deciding Mustafa Ali’s fate.
Fans speculated on what the creative’s plans were for Ali. Some believe that he was due for a reign with the NXT Championship. Despite working for the promotion for almost seven years, Mustafa Ali failed to capture any titles. The high-flyer certainly deserved better.

Mustafa Ali reacts to his replacement for NXT: No Mercy
The latest edition of NXT confirmed Mustafa Ali’s replacement for No Mercy. Trick Williams defeated Axiom, Dragon Lee, and Tyler Bate to become the #1 contender for the NXT North American Title. As a result, he will square off against Dominik Mysterio at the upcoming premium live event.

After WWE made the match official, Ali reacted to Williams’ first big moment on the Gold brand. He wrote, “good for trick, deserves it.” The 37-year-old is thrilled for his former colleague. Before this, The Disrupter looked set for a breakthrough in his career as his rivalry with Dom was seemingly prolonging past No Mercy.
However, his abrupt departure spoiled plans for creative and frustrated many backstage. Hopefully, the talented high-flyer exceeds expectations in the next move of his career, with promotions such as Impact, NJPW, and AEW looking as viable destinations for him.
