“It is an OPTION for them and not OBSESSION” Paul Heyman reveals what he looked for in the WWE tryouts
Paul Heyman has been associated with WWE for a long time. He started his career initially as a color commentator and writer and then would act as manager for various superstars before making an exit from the company in 2006 due to creative differences. Heyman would then return to WWE in 2011 and since then has closely worked with the likes of Kurt Angle, Brock Lesnar, Rob Van Dam, CM Punk, The Big Show, and the current Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns, to whom he plays the role of a special counsel.
But over the past number of years, Heyman has grown more than just a manager in the company and has been crucial in providing creative inputs to WWE from time to time. And now when the power-sharing in the company has changed, fans are expecting Paul to take more creative charge in the company. Heyman was also a part of the recent tryouts held in Nashville for college athletes.
Paul Heyman reveals what he looks for in a future superstar
Basketball star Dwight Howard became the highlight of the tryouts, but other athletes surely made a mark at the tryouts. It was the first tryout under the new leadership of Stephanie McMahon, Triple H, and Nick Khan. Other superstars and personalities were also a part of the tryout and Heyman was one of them. But what exactly Heyman was looking for in the athletes? Well, the man himself answered the question in a recent interview with Bleacher Report.
“There’s a difference right now in that today’s recruits are those who see this as an option, not an obsession,” Heyman said. “These aren’t people living and dying and breathing and hoping and praying that all of their dreams since they were five years old can come true or come crashing down around them by the decision that’s made.”
“This guy might say, ‘Oh, if this doesn’t work out, I’ll go play Canadian football,’ or, ‘I’ll go play basketball in Europe,’” he continued. “My thing is, I’m going to ask you a lot of questions you better not have the answer to because if you do, you’re in the wrong class because this is for people that don’t have the prior knowledge.”
Paul revealed that Triple H made him part of the tryout because of his mic skills and the special counsel to The Tribal Chief was excited to be on the board. Heyman also revealed at the tryout that everyone should have their Unique Selling Proposition in order to be a part of the company. The superstar should make an impact, so they leave a mark on the mentors.
