REVEALED : Real reason behind John Cena’s absence from this year’s Summerslam

John Cena

John Cena auspiciously graced our television screens recently when he made his WWE return to celebrate his 20th anniversary with the company on Raw two weeks ago. Throughout the show, the Cenation Leader encountered various new faces including Ezekiel, The Street Profits, Omos (with MVP), Theory and one of his old rivals Seth Rollins. Cena cut an absolutely electrifying promo in the ring laying down his humble thoughts regarding the undying support of the WWE Universe.

Prior to his appearance, there was numerous reports suggesting that The Franchise Player could be headed to Nashville this year to compete in a match against Theory, but obviously it’s not happening anytime soon. We now have a concrete reason to this as to why we got deprived of this match happening anytime soon. Bryan Alvarez explained the whole situation on an episode of Wrestling Observer Live revealing that John Cena will not be able to make it to this year’s Summerslam due to the shoot of his DC Comics TV show, The Peacemaker.

Here’s exactly what Alvarez had to say upon Cena, “I can confirm that being filmed right now is Peacemaker 2 and John Cena is involved,” Bryan Alvarez said.

“He’s working on Peacemaker 2 as we speak. I presume that’s why there have been discussions of him doing SummerSlam but then he showed up on Raw to announce ‘someday I’ll be back. I don’t know when, don’t know where but I’ll be back someday.’ Apparently, he’s filming Peacemaker and that’s why he can’t do SummerSlam.”

In another interesting development, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful reported that Vince McMahon was slated to travel Vancouver to meet John Cena following the tapings of Smackdown last week. The current belief is that the former WWE Chairman booked his flight inorder to discuss a potential Wrestlemania match he can do next year in Los Angeles. Recently, Dave Meltzer also hinted that WWE might have moved the planned Cena vs. Theory match to next year’s Wrestlemania.

When could John Cena realistically return to WWE for a proper program?

As mentioned above, John will be involved in filming the new season of The Peacemaker which could take up months of time to completely get it done. With around 5 and a half months left for this year, WWE could always line up Cena into their programming once he becomes available once again but there won’t be any significant thing for the 16-time World Champion to work for the remaining of this year.

With reports of his planned match against Theory getting shifted to Mania next year, Cena could make a surprise appearance in the men’s Royal Rumble match potentially involving Theory too and eliminating him from the mix to set-up their match and kickoff the build.
