Without a doubt, The Montreal Screwjob remains one of the biggest controversies in the wrestling world. And now the referee for the match, Earl Hebner who executed the Screwjob to perfection on the orders of Vince McMahon has finally revealed some inside details about the incident as well.
Hebner appeared on the latest edition of Busted Open Radio where he reflected on the incident and revealed that initially he had declined to screwjob Bret Hart when the idea was pitched to him. But eventually as the match kept going on Hebner had to rethink his stance on the matter and eventually proceeded with the job given by Mr. McMahon.
Well, Hebner said that he would’ve had to pay a huge price or maybe even his job for that matter, thus he thought that following the orders would be the best choice for him. Well, it is difficult to tell what price Earl Hebner would’ve paid had he gone against the orders but what the official got after he did might surprise you as well.
Hebner in the interview revealed that he received a hefty bonus in return of the task he did. This led to Hart ultimately leaving WWE and he headed to the company’s rival promotion WCW. Hebner remained with the company for many years until he was released by the company in 2005 and went to work for promotions like TNA and AEW in future.

On the same podcast, the screwjob referee revealed that he was invited for a house show where he didn’t want to go since Hart was also a part of it. But, Hart actually called him and his brother and invited them to the show. He further revealed that called them to the ring and hugged them.
Speaking on the podcast, Hebner said- “I think it was Big Time Wrestling or something like that. He brought us to the ring, he put us over, and he hugged us. From that day on, we’ve been great friends. I text him now and then, and he texts me back. Once in a while, we’ll talk to each other on the phone.”
To those unaware, when Bret Hart had decided to leave WWE to join it’s rival promotion WCW in 1997, he had said to McMahon that he will not loose to his rival Shawn Michaels with whom he had major real life heat. This prompted Vince McMahon to change the finish of the match without consulting it with Hart.
