What went wrong with Buddy Murphy in WWE?

Buddy Murphy looked destined to be a huge star in the WWE. A wrestler who possessed talent and charisma was always set for big things. After signing with the company in 2013, Buddy kicked off his career on the then development brand, NXT. The young superstar held the Tag Team Championships with partner Wesley Blake for a massive 219 days.

Soon after, he was called up to the main roster to boost the Cruiserweight division in early 2018. The Aussie impressed everyone with his in-ring skills as he put on bangers for the division. Murphy ended up winning the Cruiserweight Championship at that year’s Super Show-Down, defeating Cedric Alexander in front of his home crowd. A year later, he was drafted to SmackDown, where it took time for him to be involved in his first major angle.

Buddy joined Seth Rollins and the AOP in March 2020, winning the RAW Tag Team Championships with the Visionary. After almost feuding with the Mysterio family for a whole year, Murphy turned on Rollins in November. This was his last notable appearance, and he ended up being released from his contract the next year. It isn’t an overstatement to say the 34-year-old was heavily underutilized.
