WWE often narrates some of the most bizarre storylines. Vince McMahon faking his death and terrorists taking over superstars are just some of the examples of the levels that WWE Creative can go to. WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam revealed that he was also set to be involved in a similar, awkward storyline with Stephanie McMahon.

While talking on 1 of a Kind, the ECW Alumni said that, in 2001, he was approached about a romantic storyline with Stephanie McMahon. However, he did not want to do it because that might have caused some drama in his personal life with his girlfriend. So Rob Van Dam refused to go ahead with it and talked to Stephanie about it. She tried to convince RVD, but he was not willing to be involved in any romantic storylines.

Rob Van Dam recalled, “I remember talking to Bruce Prichard about it, man, I was brand new at this time. … [I was still] trying to figure out the chain of command. … Bruce was like, ‘I’m glad we had this talk. If you didn’t tell me that you were uncomfortable with certain things, then how would I know?’ … I thought everything went well, right?”

Despite Prichard’s assuring words, RVD got to know later that nothing had changed in the initial plan. Therefore, furious at Prichard, the Hall of Famer recalls wanting to slap him. However, his former boss, Paul Heyman, tried to calm him down and keep him from confronting Bruce Prichard. The two parties then sat together, and a solution was drawn out of the talks.

With the help of Paul Heyman, Bruce Prichard, and Rob Van Dam sat down and discussed the creatives. Both compromised on the storyline and Chris Jericho replaced RVD in the angle with Stephanie. This led to one of the most memorable segments for WrestleMania between Jericho and Triple H.

Going into WrestleMania X8, Stephanie McMahon ditched her real-life husband, Triple H. She aligned herself with the undisputed champion at the time, Chris Jericho. The entire feud was based on McMahon and Jericho’s chemistry, therefore, it is memorable to fans even 20 years after it happened.

Despite McMahon being in his corner, Jericho lost the title to Triple H in the main event of the night. Stephanie McMahon was equally a part of the feud, as she was also put into a pedigree by her husband during one of the episodes of SmackDown leading into Mania.
