Ronda Rousey recreated a controversial moment from the late 1990s in her match this past Saturday at Money in the Bank
Ronda Rousey recently decided to dug in the past which led to some kind of Screwjob in Montreal
Ronda Rousey successfully defended her Smackdown Women’s Championship this past Saturday night against The Queen of Hart Dynasty Natalya. To not much of a surprise Rousey made her submit to win the match before eventually losing her title to Liv Morgan following a successful Money in the Bank cash-in. But we ain’t here today to talk about Liv Morgan’s career-making moment instead we’re going to extract something from within the Rousey and Natalya match during which the Baddest Woman on the Planet reminded all of us a very memorable and controversial WWE segment from the 1997.
During their match, Rousey locked in Natalya in her own Sharpshooter submission maneuver and then she stood over it flexing her arms just like The Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels did to Natalya’s uncle Bret Hart at Survivor Series in 1997 for the WWF Championship.
Following this, the referee Earl Hubner called for the bell without even Hart tapping out to the same due to the orders from Vince McMahon which led to Michaels winning the WWF Championship from Bret Hart and due to this betrayal Hart spitted in McMahon’s face before heading to the back. This incident was termed as the “Montreal Screwjob “ and went onto become one of the most controversial segments ever in the history of WWE. Many even believe that it was due to this incident that led to the beginning of WWE’s Attitude Era whose cornerstones were Stone Cold Steve Austin and Dwayne “ The Rock” Johnson.
Rousey decided to give a throwback to this infamous incident in her match against Bret Hart’s niece. This moment although got a lot of fan attention as today’s mordern wrestling community always stays on the 4th gear of Internet surfing which enables them to recall each and every reference WWE makes from the past. To a one more recent example, Rey Mysterio payed homage to the late great Eddie Guerrero by taking a page out of his playbook this past Monday night on WWE Raw in a tag team match against The Judgement Day alongside her son Dominic.

Ronda Rousey has been on a roll since her return to WWE
Rousey entered at No. 28 in the Women’s Royal Rumble match earlier this year and won the whole thing by last eliminating Charlotte Flair which led to a Wrestlemania match between the two for the Smackdown Women’s Championship. Although Rousey lost the match following some miscommunication by the match referee which enabled Charlotte to take advantage of the situation and retain her title.
The very next month at Wrestlemania Backlash Ronda Rousey got her revenge over Flair as he beat her in a brutal “I Quit” match to win the Smackdown Women’s Championship. Last Saturday, she lost her title to Liv Morgan and now she’s set to respond to her shocking title loss this Friday Night on Smackdown.
