Steve Austin and CM Punk are two of the most recognizable names in the professional wrestling. While both of them are not currently active in WWE, the company is reportedly looking to book a match between the two at The Grandest Stage of Them All, WrestleMania 39. Well, after Punk’s fallout with AEW recently, it is not sure if the fans would want to see The Straight Edge Superstar back in WWE. But, no doubt Punk’s appearance in WWE will attract a lot of eyeballs.
According to a latest report published on The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer has hinted that secret plans for a Austin VS Punk match are being discussed backstage. Speaking on Steve Austin’s potential return to the company at The Showcase of Immortals, Meltzer noted- “there is smoke to the fire, and something is in the discussion phase. The ideas being discussed internally that are being kept secret.” (H/T-Wrestling News)
The veteran wrestling journalist also noted that there are plans for Austin to face a younger superstar to give them a push, just like he did with Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 38 or The Texas Rattlesnake could face a big-money star like John Cena, Brock Lesnar, or even CM Punk for that matter. According to the report, WWE could keep Austin’s match for one night and the mega showdown between Roman Reigns and The Rock for another.
However, With CM Punk still being in a contract with AEW makes it legally impossible for WWE to bring him to WrestleMania 39. Also, Meltzer was quick to note that the creative team backstage is still not very positive about bringing in CM Punk, especially after what happened in AEW. Thus, even if Punk can buyout his contract from AEW, there is a very slight chance that WWE brings him in for a match against Steve Austin.
