In a recent interview, Stone Cold spoke about his relationship with former AEW Champion CM Punk. The WWE legend praised Punk and revealed some interesting things. Austin and Punk shared time in WWE when the latter was at the top of his career. Stone Cold had already retired by that time and was in the list of WWE Hall of Famers.
CM Punk is considered by many to be one of the best wrestlers of all time. His in-ring skills, combined with his charismatic presence on the mic, make him a must-watch TV attraction. He returned to wrestling in AEW in 2021 after quitting WWE in 2014. His return to AEW witnessed the loudest reactions in pro-wrestling history.
While talking to Alfred Konuwa from Forbes, the Texas Rattlesnake said that he recently texted Punk and talked about his injury. He also added that he was unaware that CM Punk was injured as he no longer follows the product. Austin said that he only watches some pay-per-views and does not keep up with all the storylines.
The 58-year-old praised Punk and said that he did not remember if he ever mentored him. “Great promo guy, great worker, he’s got his own thing going and we’re just friends.” He continued, “I love the guy, and I don’t even know if I mentored him because Punk’s probably a lot smarter than I am.”
The Hall of Famer also talked about present-day wrestling while comparing it to wrestling from 1990s and early 2000s. He said that the product has changed drastically and that the wrestlers now perform on a whole different level. However, he believes that, if done in excess, the moves will lose their value.
Stone Cold Steve Austin’s last match in WWE
After having one of the best final matches to end his career in 2003, Stone Cold Steve Austin did not wrestle another match for the next 19 years. His final match with The Rock at WrestleMania 19 is considered to be one of the better ones out of their WrestleMania trilogy. Their rivalry was arguably the defining factor in the popularity of the Attitude Era.
Since 2003, Stone Cold has made sporadic appearances in WWE over the years. In 2022, there were rumors that Austin was preparing for a return to the squared ring for one more match. But fans could not believe them, as he was one of the few wrestlers who remained retired and never returned.
But during the build-up to WrestleMania 38, Kevin Owens started mocking the WWE legend and his home state of Texas. The entire build-up to their match was single-handedly carried by Kevin Owens as Stone Cold would directly appear at WrestleMania in Texas. Austin surprised the WWE Universe when he came and wrestled an entire match.
