King and Queen of the Ring return to Saudi Arabia

WWE has announced the return of a PPV themed around King of the Ring after eight years. On the latest episode of Monday Night Raw, the company broke the news that they will return to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on May 27 to crown both the King and Queen of Ring. The news came after reports and rumours had been floating around the internet for months.

WWE aired a promo hyping the PPV, which is officially named “King and Queen of the Ring.” Wade Barret won the tournament at the last King of the Ring-themed event in 2015. Since then, WWE has irregularly held the tournament, which gets concluded through random PPVs. Last year was the first time the company held a tournament for women as well, but it was named the “Queen’s Crown” tournament. However, this year they have reverted to the obvious name “Queen of the Ring” instead.

Last year’s tournaments concluded in an aptly named “Crown Jewel” PPV, which also took place in Saudi Arabia. The WWE Universe can expect a similar tournament structure as in previous years. The Quarterfinal matches will take place on Raw and SmackDown before the event. This will lead to the semi-final and final matches happening at the PPV on May 27. However, the fans will have to wait for the official announcement of the contestants and matches in the tournament.

Xavier Woods and Zelina Vega won the King and Queen of the Ring tournament last year

The promotional video for the PPV featured some main event stars like Charlotte Flair, Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, Bianca Belair, Seth Rollins, and more. However, conspicuous by their absence were any real winners of past tournaments, especially the reigning King and Queen of the Ring. Last year’s winners, Xavier Woods, and Zelina Vega took to Twitter to emphasize making their case.

Zelina Vega made the point about how the “last and first” Queen of the Ring wasn’t shown in the clip, while Woods went one step further. The New Day member shared an edited version of the video where he had seemingly “fixed it.” The custom version contained only vignettes from Xavier Woods and Zelina Vega’s runs as King and Queen.

Past winners of the tournament have been included in the video, like Harley Race, Randy Savage, Bret Hart, Triple H, Kurt Angle, William Regal, and more. However, some modern winners have not been given much limelight after being crowned, reducing it to just a gimmick. Nonetheless, under a new regime, it will be interesting to see how the King and Queen of the Ring tournaments will further the careers of the winners.
