Mark Callaway, a.k.a. The Undertaker, is arguably one of the most significant characters in professional wrestling history. Over three decades, the Deadman’s career has seen numerous historic moments. In a recent interview, The Phenom revealed that it was during the Boneyard match at WrestleMania 36 that he realized he should hang up his wrestling boots.
The Undertaker wrestled AJ Styles in a breathtaking “Boneyard” match at WrestleMania 36. Being in the pandemic era, the match was produced in a cinematic fashion. It was shot in multiple parts, and the wrestlers involved had practiced the entire sequence. Taker defeated Styles in the match by burying him and then leaving the yard on his bike. This would mark the last match in the career of the Deadman.
While talking to Alistair McGeorge from Metro, the 58-year-old talked about his retirement decision. He revealed that while filming the Boneyard match, he had an epiphany that he could not go any longer like he used to. Taker said that his heart did not want to stop, but the lengthy career had taken a toll on his physical health.
The Hall of Famer added, “My back is completely locked up, Iโve got pain shooting down my legs. Thatโs when I knew I was done,” noting that itโs not something he really talked about a lot. Taker had to go through multiple surgeries in the last years of his career, which also impacted his in-ring abilities.
While talking on The Last Ride, Undertaker hinted at not being willing to step in the ring again. He would announce his retirement and have a retirement program at Survivor Series 2020. The show also marked the 30th anniversary of Survivor Series 1990, when The Undertaker debuted in WWE.
