UPDATE: Details on Wade Barrett’s new deal with WWE reportedly revealed

Wade Barrett as a commentator in NXT

Wade Barrett is one of the talented wrestlers of all time. He came into prominence as the leader of the villainous stable The Nexus. Wade Barrett’s work as a heel was very well received and widely praised by the WWE Universe. Wade Barrett decided to become a professional wrestler when he was 21 years old and joined OVW in 2006 and wrestled for two years on the promotion. Thereafter he joined the FCW, where he wrestled until 2010 and back when NXT was a minor production in scripted format, Barrett won the NXT competition, which awarded a WWE contract.

After being kicked out of Nexus in 2010, Wade Barrett had formed a new stable in January 2011 called as The Corre, consisting of Justin Gabriel, Ezekiel Jackson and Heath Slater and during his time with The Corre, he won the intercontinental Championship for the first time in his career. The group dissolved in June of the same year. In the late 2013s Wade Barrett debuted with a brand-new gimmick, Bad News Barrett. The Gimmick involved Wade Barrett giving Bad news regarding the ongoing storylines but in a comedic fashion.

He even won an intercontinental Championship during this time but was forced to vacate the title due to an injury. When he returned, he resumed with the gimmick but then WWE cancelled it, for reasons being unclear, with some saying that they cancelled it because he was getting too popular.

Wade Barrett had revealed why the Bad News Barrett gimmick was dropped

After dropping the Bad News Barrett Gimmick, Wade Barret won the King of the Ring Tournament in 2015 and would then compete as King Barrett with a heel persona. The gimmick received a lukewarm response from fans and was not as excellent as his previous one. Barrett was released from WWE in 2016 and thereafter he took a hiatus from wrestling to focus on his acting career. Barret returned to WWE in 2020 in a non-wrestling role and worked as a commentator on NXT Brand. He hasn’t wrestled since 2016 and King Barrett was his last gimmick.

The BNB gimmick was intended to be a heel, but the WWE Universe began to anticipate it as a possible babyface and were pleased by it, despite the fact that it was designed to disrespect them. Back in 2017, during an interview with SportsBible, Barret revealed the reason as to why his BNB gimmick was cancelled. Wade Barret said that Vince McMahon never wanted him to become a babyface and that Vince thought that Wade wrestled like a heel.

Wade noted that the crowd occasionally reacts differently even when we are playing a heel, implying that many loved the character and saw him as a babyface. Wade explained that stopping the Bad News Barret Gimmick was the only way to transform me into a heel and stop the crowd from applauding me.

Wade is currently happy with his position and looks like he has extended his contract with the WWE. While speaking with BT Sport recently, Wade said that he has agreed to a new deal with the WWE and is happy to continue in his role with NXT.

“About to hit my two-year anniversary, just signed a new extension to my contract actually. Last week I agreed to a new deal, I’m very happy to be staying around with WWE and continuing in my role with NXT.”

The contract seems to be for the role of the commentator and it is unknown whether Wade Barrett will wrestle again but we sure do want to see Barrett wrestle again and get the push he deserves.
