“He brought so many ELEMENTS of that to himself”- Former WWE creative writer unveils the curtained mystery behind CM Punk’s Pipebomb promo in WWE

CM Punk during his Pipebomb Raw promo

There have been very few men in the history of professional wrestling who can proudly they’ve owned other wrestlers on the microphone multiple times in their career and one of them is Chicago’s own CM Punk who is currently signed to All Elite Wrestling. Punk was a main staple of WWE’s programing around a decade ago where he had one of the most memorable in-ring performances and segments in company’s history after a long time.

His popularity went an absolute high after he defeated John Cena for the WWE Championship at Money in the Bank in 2011 and that too in front of his hometown crowd of Chicago, Illinois during which CM Punk was heavily cheered despite being a heel superstar as compared to Cena being booed out of the Allstate Arena. It was that time in his career when people bought tickets inorder to watch him perform live wherever WWE travelled their shows from. The only thing Punk didn’t got in his marvelous career was a spot in the main-event of Wrestlemania.

One of the greatest and most controversial promos in entire wrestling industry was delivered by this man himself that came on June 27th, 2011 edition of Monday Night Raw in which Punk sat down on the entrance ramp dishing out multiple shots directed towards Vince McMahon and John Cena and they were all legit.

He pushed far the limit and even mentioned that WWE would become a better place after Vince McMahon’s death and called Cena a great a** kisser of Vince during his iconic promo. It was the exact time when his contract was likely coming up and people within the management wasn’t sure that whether Punk will resign with them or not and most probably this was reason that gave the reigning the freedom to do such controversial stuff.

Former WWE writer Brian Gewirtz revealed some insights behind CM Punk’s Pipebomb promo while speaking to Ariel Helwani of BT Sport where he said that although Vince and company knew that they’ve a promo segment scheduled for 11 pm for CM Punk but the actual lines that Punk uttered during on-air was very much his innovation and he wasn’t even supposed to sat down at the entrance area. Brian said that the promo was very much from Punk’s own heart but at the same time the key people backstage were well aware of what possibly was going to unveil down during those minutes and they even knew when to cut that mic off Punk.

“I mean, the real element of that was CM Punk’s contract was coming up. There were backstage tensions in terms of performer and management, and not knowing whether Punk was going to re-sign or not re-sign. Vince and the company knew that we had it scheduled in segment 11 for CM Punk to come out and cut a promo but I know Vince and everyone had a version of it in front of them and knew when to cut the mic. It was part of a television show, to be sure.”
