“He kind of annoyed me a bit”- When Ronda Rousey had criticized Michael Phelps for his behavior at the 2008 Beijing Olympics
Ronda Rousey and Michael Phelps
Ronda Rousey has been dominant in the WWE since her debut in 2017. Many, including Dave Meltzer and Jim Cornette have called it one of the best debuts ever. Ronda Rousey had been unstoppable since her return from the hiatus, winning the Royal Rumble and defeating Charlotte Flair in a “I quit” match at WrestleMania Backlash for the SmackDown Women’s Championship. Rousey also showed audacity when she issued an open Challenge on May 13 edition of SmackDown for her Women’s title, which Rachel Rodriguez accepted but rousey defeated her.
Unfortunately, this Saturday Ronda Rousey lost her SmackDown Women’s Championship to Liv Morgan at the Money in The Bank Live event, which ended her reign of 55 days. Morgan cashed in her MITB contract, which she had won the same night and countered rousey’s ankle lock to successfully defeat her. Earlier that night,Rousey successfully defended her Championship at the MITB Live event against Natalya, with whom she had begun a feud this past month, after Natalya had won the number one contender’s match for the SmackDown women’s Championship.
Ronda Rousey competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics
Ronda Rousey competed as a Judoka in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where she lost at the quarterfinals but managed to win a bronze medal. She is the first american to win an olympic medal in judo in the women’s field.
Ronda Rousey is very outspoken and bold when she speaks about the people around her, just last week she mocked Natalya for not having children and making wrestling her top priority. She had been very much forthright about Natalya’s life and posted it on social media.
Back in 2012, while sharing her experiences of the 2008 Beijing Olympics in an interview with Elie Seckbach, Rousey talked about The Olympic Gold Medalist Swimmer Michael Phelps, She said that Michel Phelps annoyed her a bit because when other athletes including NBA players mixed together and socialized with each other,Phelps had a private space reserved just for his team. Ronda said that the NBA players are a bigger deal than phelps but they have no condescension.
“Michael Phelps kind of annoyed me a bit because we had this club thing where all the players had been hanging out, the NBA Players were there, everyones there and Michael had his own private section. “These NBA players are a bigger deal than this guy, and they’re hanging out with us. We’re teammates. We’re not a bunch of groupies. Come hang out with us,”
Ronda continued that she doesn’t like being treated as a groupie, when she’s a teammate. Ronda said she didn’t even feel like greeting Michael Phelps. She continued and said that all he does is swim and if someone slaps him everytime he jumps in the pool then he might respect the people around him.
“I don’t like being somebody’s teammate and being treated like I’m a groupie. I didn’t even want to go out of my way to say hello to that guy. Get over yourself. All you do is swim. If someone slapped you every time you jumped in the pool, I might have a little respect, but I was a swimmer before I did this stuff, and you can’t tell me that swimming is OH MY GOD, because it’s not.”
When asked about some cool people she had mentioned Kobe Bryant as one of the coolest she has come across. Michael Phelps won eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing olympics and broke Mark Spitz’s record of seven gold medal wins.
