2022 was a turbulent year for William Regal, filled with ups and downs. WWE released him in January last year as part of the “budget cuts” which came as a shocking blow to the fans to watch the onscreen General Manager of NXT leave so suddenly. He made his debut in AEW a couple of months later at their PPV event “Revolution” in March 2022.

After getting released from his AEW contract in December, William Regal was set to be WWE bound. Now, according to PWInsider, the former Intercontinental champion will make his return to the company at the January 6th edition of Friday Night SmackDown in Memphis.

When Triple H took over the creative control of the promotion, many expected some radical changes in the company. It all started in the first week of his reign itself when Bayley, Iyo Sky, and Dakota Kai made their shocking return at SummerSlam. Since then Dexter Lumis, Johnny Gargano, Candice LeRae, Bray Wyatt, and other superstars have joined them back.

William Regal is the recent backstage addition to the workforce of Triple H. The Blackpool native asked for his release from AEW back in September as confirmed by Tony Khan. Khan also revealed that he granted the release as Regal wanted to work with his son, Charlied Dempsey, in WWE. Now, reports have surfaced the internet that William Regal will be back in WWE this week on Friday Night SmackDown.

William Regal to not have an onscreen role

AEW & ROH owner Tony Khan didn’t grant the release unconditionally to Regal. As part of his release, the former NXT GM was not allowed to be an onscreen character for at least a year as confirmed by Tony Khan himself.

Regal formed the Blackpool Combat Club in AEW with Bryan Danielson and Jon Moxley. The group grew in numbers in the following months. The young star Wheeler Yuta and former WWE United States Champion Claudio Castagnoli (Cesaro in WWE) all came under the mentorship of the British Brawler. In his last live appearance, Regal was in a segment with the new AEW World Heavyweight Champion MJF, where the champ punched him on the back of his head, writing him off from AEW. After seeing the promos from the Gentleman Villain in AEW, there is no doubt his absence will be felt on live TV.

Before getting released, Regal’s previous title in WWE was Director of Talent Development and Head of Global Recruiting. And now he is reportedly set to return at Friday Night SmackDown with his new role as the Vice President.
