Kevin Patrick was one of the most recognized faces in the WWE since their post-COVID Era comeback. On Thursday, following his brief stint as a SmackDown announcer, the 38-year-old got released from the company. This happened just a few days after WWE management decided to pull him off the commentary desk.
Mike Johnson of PWInsider stated that Patrick was a “liked personality” backstage. However, there was a general belief that he wasn’t made for the “play-by-play” commentary style. The blue brand could see the good old Michael Cole end up recreating his duo with Corey Graves.
Patrick was someone who was tested in several roles in the company. For a while, the lead announcer, Michael Cole, had to do double duty on both shows to make Patrick comfortable. It seems WWE wanted to test Patrick, as they soon went on to remove Cole from SmackDown and brought the two-man team to all of their brands.
While hiring someone from outside always remains an option, not many are cut-out for life as a WWE announcer. It would be interesting to see where Kevin Patrick heads after a notable run in WWE. Many observers also await his side of the story that ultimately led to his getting fired.
WWE fans feel sorry for Kevin Patrick after his surprise release from the company
WWE fans had a love-hate relationship with Kevin Patrick. While the Irish personality gave his best by taking up the opportunity to expand his horizons, he kept falling short of delivering the excitement that fans expected from a WWE commentator. Now that he has been released, many fans feel bad, as the man’s incapacity didn’t merit a step as big as getting released.
A prominent section of the fans looked in agreement over how the man wasn’t cut out for his role as a commentator. However, they saw firing him as a drastic step that could’ve been avoided. Many went on to propose him as a backstage interviewer, where Patrick had already spent considerable time.
With WWE signing bigger and better deals, such steps could suggest a desire to improvise the overall programming. While firing seems like a tough step from an emotional perspective, Patrick has gained sufficient experience that fans might see him work for either a rival promotion or a different genre altogether. While the decision might not have been entirely out of negative fan response, it once again brought attention to the WWE’s practice of filtering its talent.
