Rey Mysterio and Dana White among many who came to support Cain Velasquez
Cain Velasquez, the former UFC heavyweight champion, was denied bail in his attempted murder case on Monday, but he has received backing from a number of combative sports figures.
Many sports personalities filed letters in the favour of Cain Velasquez
Over 30 people filed petitions to Judge Shelyna Brown urging that Cain Velasquez be released on bail, as per TMZ Sports. UFC president Dana White, UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, former lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov, and former two-division titleholder Henry Cejudo were among those who backed Velasquez. WWE superstar Rey Mysterio, Bellator president Scott Coker, Bellator heavyweight champion Ryan Bader, and UFC contenders Kelvin Gastelum, Islam Makhachev, Yair Rodriguez, Brandon Moreno, and others all backed Velasquez.
However, The letters didn’t dissuade Brown, who said the “risk is too large” to let Velasquez out on bail because of his alleged activities’ “extreme recklessness,” according to ESPN’s Marc Raimondi.
What are the charges on Cain Velasquez?
Velasquez was apprehended on Feb. 28 after reportedly attempting to assassinate Harry Goularte, 43. Goularte’s stepfather, Paul Bender, was shot in the arm and chest by the former fighter, who was 39 years old at the time. Bender was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
As per Raimondi, Goularte, who is suspected of repeatedly molesting a kid in Cain Velasquez’s household, was released without bail on Feb. 25 against the district attorney’s desires.
“Is there anybody out there who would say to a father that this is not what you should do?” Velasquez’s attorney Mark Geragos said Monday. “Is there anybody out there who finds it beyond the pale that a father was not consulted when they released the perpetrator back into the public with zero-dollar bail, yet they’re holding Cain on no bail? This is why people are disgusted—and rightfully so—with the criminal justice system.”
Velasquez’s next appearance in court is scheduled for April 12. Unless the district prosecutor adds or removes charges, he won’t be able to obtain bail again.
