The latest episode of SmackDown was filled with many surprises and interesting segments. Of course, the most prominent among these was the return of The Rock. Some fans had issues with the Final Boss’ promo itself, some didn’t like the quality of the matches, and others thought that there was no significant story progression. Regardless, much of this was blamed on Triple H‘s close friend, Road Dogg.

After the show went off the air on Friday night, many social media users complained about the quality of this episode. As of now, this episode is rated 2.4/10 on Cagematch. Many fans faulted Road Dogg for this mess, who was recently announced to be rejoining SmackDown as its lead writer.

The most controversial part of the show was definitely The Rock‘s segment with Cody Rhodes. He cut an uncomfortable promo, which was filled with him repeating the same thing, just in different words. The segment finally ended with him telling The American Nightmare that he wanted his soul.

Another segment that highly disappointed fans involved the women’s main event scene. Tiffany Stratton took on Candice LeRae in a match filled with interference. After the WWE Women’s Champion won, she got attacked by the heels. Even a run-in by Trish Stratus was not able to save her. Furthermore, Nia Jax‘s soft finisher didn’t make things better either.

The wrestling world severely criticized Road Dogg for the quality of the latest episode of SmackDown. A fan mentioned how his tenure was already off to a terrible start. Many netizens raised issues with the recent creative process. They believed that the entire product had gone downhill over the past few weeks.

Fans pointed out that WWE programming was at its worst during Dogg’s previous tenure as lead writer of SmackDown. AJ Styles and several others defended the former Intercontinental Champion, attributing the show’s creative struggles to Vince McMahon’s heavy involvement. However, it seems that history may be repeating itself, as little has changed this time around.

Some fans defended the promotion by saying that WWE did have to make a lot of changes to this episode. After the company announced the return of The People’s Champion, two matches had to be removed from the show.

One of these was Bloodline 2.0 (Solo Sikoa, Jacob Fatu, and Tama Tonga) vs. Cody Rhodes, Damian Priest, and Braun Strowman. Furthermore, Naomi vs. Liv Morgan was also scrapped from the card. While removing women’s matches from the card is always looked down upon, some understood that it had to be done for the Hollywood superstar.
