If ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The New York Yankees seem to have taken this saying quite literally as they have resembled the same attacking lineup from last year following the signing of veteran Paul Goldschmidt on Friday on a one-year deal.
After losing in the World Series in 2024, the Yankees suffered an American League Division Series (ALDS) exit at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays. They got blown away by their division rivals and lost the best-of-five series after 4 games.
Following the conclusion of the season, the team re-signed Trent Grisham as he accepted the $22.05 million qualifying offer from the team. However, Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt, two players who were signed in the previous offseason, became free agents.
After spending almost the entirety of the offseason trying to bring Bellinger back, the team have now roped in Goldschmidt. The 2022 National League MVP re-signed with the Bronx Bombers on a 1-year deal and returned to them.

The former St. Louis Cardinals star had a mixed season last year. After an impressive start, the 7-time All-Star suffered a dip in form. He had a .889 OPS through May but struggled to .610 the rest of the way.
He did have a good performance against the lefties, but struggled against right-handed pitchers. Goldschmidt ended the 2025 season, hitting with a .274 average. In 146 games, he hit 10 home runs and had 45 RBIs.
Fans react as Yankees bring back Paul Goldschmidt on 1-year deal
Paul Goldschmidt is back in the Bronx. On Friday, reports emerged that the 38-year-old had re-signed with the New York Yankees on a 1-year deal. This development did not sit well with many fans of the team, who criticized the team on social media.

Several users on X called out the team management once again. One user wrote, “such an unserious offseason“, and claimed that the team did not even try to land some pitchers following the exit of Devin Williams and Luke Weaver.
Check out that and some other reactions from fans below:
Such an unserious offseason lol I don’t even hate it but crazy how they’ve ignored the pitching

Blocking at bats for Ben Rice, this team cannot be serious man.

Another thing the fans did not like was that Goldschmidt had more at-bats than Ben Rice last season. The 26-year-old had a breakout year last year. In 467 at-bats, Rice hit 26 home runs and had 65 RBIs while batting with a .255 average in 138 games. Many fans want him to play more games than the veteran infielder.
GM Brian Cashman recently defended the Yankees while claiming it was not the same team running it back
The 2025 offseason has been a slow one for the New York Yankees. The team lost out on several targets as they kept chasing Cody Bellinger. Last week, General Manager Brian Cashman defended the team and claimed it was not the same team they were running back.

Cashman and the other executives caught some flak for just re-signing some of the former players. During the offseason, the organization brought back the likes of Tim Hill, Ryan Yarbrough, Paul Blackburn and Amed Rosario.
In a Zoom meeting last week, the 58-year-old claimed that he was openly willing to challenge anyone who said his team was not a championship-caliber team.
I disagree it’s the same team running it back… I’ve been openly willing to challenge anybody that we don’t have a championship-caliber roster and team.

Do you agree with Brian Cashman's assessment of the Yankees roster as it stands now?

The pitching department is one area where the team is a bit shorthanded at the moment. Starters Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon are both expected to remain out of action until mid-May.
The AL East side did have its eyes set on Miguel Cabrera and Freddy Peralta. However, they lost out on both as they joined the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets, respectively. It remains to be seen whether they will go for a starting pitcher in the upcoming weeks as the Spring Training inches closer.
