In Short
  • Yoel Romero, at 49, scored a knockout victory over Alex Nicholson in just 70 seconds at Gamebred FC.
  • Romero broke Nicholson's jaw, leading to a verbal tap-out during their bare-knuckle MMA fight.
  • Romero expressed a desire to fight Anderson Silva before retiring, hoping to make the matchup happen in MMA.

Being 49 years of age means most athletes have been retired for around a decade. However, former UFC middleweight Yoel Romero is proving that notion wrong with his resurgence in the twilight of his career. As such, the Cuban added another highlight to his resume recently at Jorge Masvidal‘s Gamebred FC.

The most recent card from Masvidal’s promotion featured an action-packed card held in the former welterweight’s native Miami. He faced former UFC and PFL fighter Alex Nicholson, who stepped up on short notice after Romero’s original opponent, Hector Lombard, dropped out. However, Lombard may now be counting his lucky stars after what happened during the latest edition of Gamebred FC.

The Soldier of God’s recent bare-knuckle MMA fight in Gamebred FC saw a knockout for the ages. Romero shattered his opponent’s jaw in 70 seconds, making his way back into the win column after a recent skid.

Nicholson actually did well to begin the fight, putting down Yoel Romero with an accurate trip. However, he evidently had no chance once the Olympic silver medalist began putting his skills to use. The 49-year-old’s ground strikes broke Nicholson’s jaw, leading to him tapping verbally. The Cuban has always been incredibly powerful, as confirmed by Luke Rockhold, and it seems he still carries that power.

Yoel Romero has remained very active over the past few years since leaving Bellator. Much like Arman Tsarukyan, he seems to be everywhere, from wrestling matches to fighting bare knuckle. However, he was on a bit of an apparent skid, losing his last RAF match as well as his last IBA Bareknuckle match.

But before his knockout victory at Jorge Masvidal’s Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA show, Romero actually teased a fight that a lot of fans wanted to see back in his UFC days.

Yoel Romero calls for a fight against UFC legend Anderson Silva

Yoel Romero vs Anderson Silva is one of those dream fights that fans never got to see. Despite being close in age, their primes never really coincided within the UFC, so a fight never ended up materializing. However, Romero wants to face the ‘Spider’ before wrapping up his lengthy career.

Romero recently appeared on the Ariel Helwani Show alongside Jorge Masvidal. In this appearance, the Cuban revealed that he had wanted the Silva fight for a while, with it even coming close to materializing before ultimately falling through. Romero even said he would like to retire after this fight.

There are many times I’ve wanted to fight Anderson Silva, because I respect him so much. Silva was the best, was the GOAT—it was close a couple of times in the UFC, but it never materialized. It wouldn’t matter if it’s a win or a loss—just to get in the cage with Anderson Silva. This is a fight I would like to retire on. If Anderson wants to do it, I would love to do it.

Romero said that he would be open to going up against Silva in either boxing or MMA. This prompted Masvidal to add that they plan to make this fight in MMA. However, that may be easier said than done with Anderson Silva’s retirement from MMA

The Brazilian legend has been on a tear in the boxing ring. He recently obliterated former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. Moreover, the Spider has said that he would be open to a couple more boxing matches, so this could be the way fans see him take on Yoel Romero.

While Silva’s retirement could be on the horizon, fans will still see more of Yoel Romero. The ‘Soldier of God’ revealed to Ariel Helwani that he still has another 2 or 3 years left before he hangs up his gloves. With the way he looked against Alex Nicholson, there is no doubt that Romero can manage it.
