Gilbert Arenas, a former basketball player, is well-known for his harsh views on both previous and current players as well as NBA coaches. However, his latest statement on The Gil’s Arena podcast about basketball stars not liking “new coaches” coming in may cause some controversy in the world of basketball.
On his podcast, Arenas claimed that a particular star may not like a new coach coming in because of the “sacrifices” he would have to make. Also, in recent times there haven’t been many NBA coaches who have coached a team for a longer period. This creates a lot of uncertainty among the players on the roster. Interestingly, Gilbert Arenas‘ take on this situation does make sense as it is tough for a superstar to cope with the idea of new coaches coming in.
See this is the pushback sometimes, the players been there before the coach...He has seen none of us play right? and he's already saying 'You need to take a lesser role' And the player is going to bump heads with that because 'your telling me to take a sacrifice' and you don't even know what you fu**en have here yet.Gilbert Arenas on Gil’s Arena Podcast,
In earlier NBA periods, famous coaches were part of the league’s best teams. In the process, they helped shape some of the best players of all time into the legends we know today. However, at present in the NBA there are many young coaches in the league, with players much older than the coach. Hence, Areans’ view on this particular situation makes sense to a certain extent.
Gilbert Arenas once made a bold claim regarding current NBA coaches and players
In the past, it was the coaches who were the most important element of an NBA side. The saying: “Great coaches made great players” was in full effect back in the early 1990s and 2000s. However, in the modern era, coaches are not regarded highly as the star players in a particular roster. Concerning this, Gilbert Arenas provided important insight regarding the current NBA coaches and players.
When we're talking about legacies and we're talking about top fives…no one's factoring in coaches.Gilbert Arenas on Gil’s Arena Podcast,
Arenas makes a valid point here since coaches rarely stay with one team for long because it is difficult to produce consistent champions these days.
The only NBA coaches now regarded as permanent are Gregg Popovich, Steve Kerr, and Erik Spoelstra. These 3 have been making the lives of players across the league more difficult for a variety of reasons. Apart from these 3 coaches, there has not been any consistency in coaching top players. It remains to be seen how this issue will be tackled in the sport of basketball in the coming years.
