Yuzvendra Chahal created history on 22nd April, 2024, by becoming the first bowler to pick up 200 wickets in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He achieved this feat by dismissing Mumbai Indians (MI) all-rounder Mohammad Nabi.
This wicket came in his 153rd IPL match and 19th match for RR. The spinner picked up this wicket in his very first over of the match. Chahal tossed up the ball and made Nabi play the shot early.
All Chahal needed to do was take an easy catch to become the first bowler to pick up 200 wickets. He fell on his knees and pointed to the sky to celebrate, after which he was surrounded by his teammates. He ended the innings with figures of 1/48.
Starting his IPL career in 2013 with MI, Yuzvendra Chahal did not make his mark until 2014, when he was purchased by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), where he played for 8 seasons. The spinner picked up 139 wickets in those eight seasons, becoming their highest wicket taker.
Chahal was released by the franchise in 2022 and was purchased by Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Mega Auction. The leg-spinner then achieved a lot, having his best season by picking up 27 wickets. He has picked up 61 wickets for the franchise and is just 6 wickets away from becoming their highest wicket taker.
Fans call for Yuzvendra Chahal to be included in World Cup squad
Many fans were ecstatic after Yuzvendra Chahal’s record-breaking wicket. They called for the spinner to be selected in the Indian team for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Chahal has never played in the T20 WC, being ignored in 2016, 2021 and 2022. Some fans mocked RCB for releasing the star.
Check out their reactions:
MI ended their innings with 179 runs. Tilak Varma hit 65 off 45, while Nehal Wadhera missed out on his fifty by a run. Sandeep Sharma ended the innings with his first IPL fifer.
