Punjab Kings (PBKS) made their first appearance in the said name as the side formerly called Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) took on Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their first match of the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). After a promising display in the second half of the season last year, the side seemed to continue in the same vein as they came up with a fiery first innings total of 221.

It was an all to familiar contributor among the runs as captain KL Rahul continued from where he left off last season with a superb knock, answering the critics of his strike-rate, intent and the like. He was well-supported by Deepak Hooda who also came up with a stupendous 20-ball half-century. Rahul fell short of his 100 by 9 runs but he ensured that RR had an extremely steep total to chase.

The new jersey of Punjab Kings has been receiving mixed response among fans on social media. Many have noticed that the kit is similar to the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) old kits during the early 2010s. As soon as PBKS debuted the kit today, Twitter was flooded with response on it with many stating that it has been brought in to unleash the likes of Chris Gayle by calling back to his RCB days.

In that vein, RCB spinner Yuzvendra Chahal also took a friendly jibe at Chris Gayle and KL Rahul tweeting, “Welcome to @RCBTweets boys @henrygayle @klrahul11” This funny piece of banter from Chahal has now gone viral on social media as well with fans agreeing with the leggie’s assessment of PBKS’ kit.
