When Zach Wilson joined the Denver Broncos, after an unfortunate departure from the New York Jets this offseason, he seemed to have gotten a fresh start and was even in the running for the starting quarterback position. However, after the latest update from the training camp, it appears the quarterback might have lost his chance to lead the team in the first week of the 2024 season.

Wilson is practicing with the third-team offense and many speculate he is struggling to even remain on the roster. Although no official news has come in regards to the Broncos’ starting position, head coach Sean Payton reportedly skipped Wilson’s turn in the practice on Tuesday, July 30th.

Having said that, Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham are currently in the running for the starting position for week 1. The former’s turn in the practice with the starting offense was on Sunday, while the latter covered on Monday. Following them, it was the turn of Wilson, however, he practiced with the third-team offense.

Look, we've got a plan. Bo ran with the 1s [Monday], Zach with the 2s; today, it was [Stidham] with the 1s. No news to announce there. I know you're looking for it, but...
Sean Payton told the reporters

Payton was initially impressed with Wilson during the offseason program, however at the training camp when asked if the quarterback would get more opportunities with the starting offense, he gave a vague response.

Zach Wilson faces uncertainty as Sean Payton evaluates other candidates

This sudden change in the practice session is anticipated to be a shocker for the former Jets’ quarterback, given that head coach Payton was actually considering him a serious candidate for the starting position. Judging from the recent updates, it appears Wilson’s depth chart didn’t impress him a lot.

Meanwhile, the 12th overall pick of the 2024 draft and Stidham are under grave scrutiny for their performances. Although the Broncos head coach hasn’t set a date for the decision on the starting quarterback, training camp is the best chance for them to prove their ability.

In many aspects, Nix seems to be favored as head coach Payton was reportedly quite impressed with his performance in the practice sessions as well as the offseason program.
