15 Spanish female football players threaten to leave the squad if Spain National team’s coach is not removed: Reports

Despite the Spanish FA’s protests to the contrary, a handful of Spain players have reaffirmed their desire to remain unchosen until a “professional project” has been committed to.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said on Thursday that 15 members of the women’s national team had threatened to leave the team if manager Jorge Vilda was not fired, citing their physical and mental health. However, players, including Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas of Barcelona, who was not among the first to sign the letter, released an unified statement on social media in reaction to the RFEF on Friday.

“We want a firm commitment towards a professional project in which all aspects are taken care of to get the best performances out of a group of players who we consider can achieve more and better objectives,” the players said.

15 players refuse to play for Spain National team

The RFEF’s head of women’s football indicated earlier on Friday that the organization will honor the players’ request and not call them up for forthcoming matches against Sweden and the United States.

“Jorge Vilda will make a list in which these 15 players will not be included, as it is their wish, for the reasons they have given,” Alvarez said.

“The work of the management group goes beyond those 15 players. In Spain we have talent of a very high level, with more, equal or less experience.”

The players neither expressly demanded Vilda be replaced nor gave reasons for their request. The players are dissatisfied with Vilda’s team selection, his training methods, the way injuries are handled, the environment in the locker room, and other factors, according to sources familiar with the issue.
