It is unfortunate that Ja Morant‘s time with the Memphis Grizzlies may soon be coming to an end. When he was drafted by the Grizzlies as the second pick in the 2019 NBA draft, the Grizzlies picked a player who could be the face of the franchise for years to come.
The early signs were promising as he was named the Rookie of the Year, led the Grizzlies to the playoffs in his second season, and won the Most Improved Player award in his third. However, off-court issues and injuries took a significant toll on his career.
After making just 20 appearances in the 2025-26 campaign and 79 appearances in his last three seasons, the Grizzlies have finally decided to move on. According to NBA insider Sam Amick, three clubs are interested in acquiring Morant’s services – the New Orleans Pelicans, the Sacramento Kings, and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

There is no doubt that Ja Morant is an undeniable talent. Known for his athleticism and explosiveness, he can get the crowd to their feet and is box-office. However, after seven seasons in the NBA, he has massively underachieved as he has never taken his team past the second round and never made an All-Star appearance in three years.
When it was reported that the Grizzlies are open to listening to offers for Morant in January, he was heavily linked to the Miami Heat. The rumors were further fueled when he purchased a property in the city. But no move materialized.
Among the three teams mentioned, the Pelicans seem to be the frontrunners at the moment. If he does join them, he will be joining forces with Zion Williamson, who was the number one pick in his draft class.
Ja Morant to team up with Anthony Edwards in Minnesota?
Earlier this year, Ja Morant reiterated his desire to stay in Memphis while the club has been active with his representatives to find another home. Unfortunately, it looks like his time with the franchise is over as they look to hit the reset button and rebuild their squad.
While the Pelicans are the frontrunners at the moment, another club interested in Morant is the Minnesota Timberwolves. While Morant could be the main man in New Orleans, that will not be the case in Minnesota. That title belongs to Anthony Edwards.
Over the last three years, Edwards has established himself as one of the best players in the league. A label that was supposed to be associated with Morant for a while now. The two share a good relationship with each other, and Edwards will welcome the 26-year-old with open arms.
It will be interesting to see the pairing of Edwards and Morant in the NBA. It remains to be seen what trade package the Wolves can put together to acquire Morant in the offseason.
Ja Morant can be the main man in Sacramento Kings
The third club linked to Morant is the Sacramento Kings. The Kings are in a transition period. After an impressive 2022-23 campaign, many expected the Kings to build from there. Unfortunately, they have completely fallen off and failed to even reach the playoffs since.
The Kings have the seventh pick for the 2026 NBA draft after an underwhelming 2025-26 campaign. They finished at 14th place in the Western Conference standings with a 22-60 record.

The Kings have some assets they could use to trade for Ja Morant. With an aging Russell Westbrook playing as the point guard, Morant will be the perfect fit to lead the Kings’ offense and be the main man.
The club is in dire need of a superstar talent, and Morant could be the answer to it if he stays healthy and away from off-court distractions. It could also be the perfect environment for Morant to establish himself as a superstar. No matter what happens, Morant will be a major storyline this offseason.
