Nick Kyrgios has been pretty vocal about his frustration regarding the tennis schedule. The Australian again lashed out at the hectic schedule at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in Los Angeles. The exhibition tournament was organized by Serena Williams’ former coach Patrick Mouratoglou.
Nick Kyrgios is currently recovering from a wrist injury, which meant that he took up the role of a coach for Frances Tiafoe. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist is not a fan of the ATP calendar, for which he was criticized by former world number five Jimmy Arias. The Australian stated that there is no chance that he continued to play until his mid-30s, given the number of tournaments professionals have to play every year.
He hinted at retiring early, stating that he could not keep up with the demands of the schedule for a long period of time. “The sport’s crazy,” he said at the tournament. “The schedule is out of control. No f**king chance [I play till I am 33], there’s no way. There’s no chance. I’m playing till 33? Insane! I’m not playing till 33. I promise you when I’m gone, you’ll never see me again,” said Kyrgios.
Jimmy Arias harshly criticizes Nick Kyrgios

Jimmy Arias harshly criticized Nick Kyrgios following his comments on the tennis schedule. The former American tennis player stated that the 2022 Australian Open Doubles champion does not even play much tennis every year. He also took a dig at the Australian for his active interest towards video gaming.
“I don’t know what he’s talking about when he says this schedule is out of control. He’s played one match this year. He seems to take every other year off, so he should be able to play for another 25 years,” said Arias. “It’s just interesting to listen to him talk, let’s see what happens when he’s 33. But as we’re talking right now, I don’t know [if] he’s gonna play five more matches [this year]. He’s played once so far this year. I’m not sure [his] wrist, knee, his tattoo is hurting him too much [from playing] Pokemon maybe. I don’t know,” he added.
Nick Kyrgios had an incredible 2022 season, which saw him claim the Australian Open Men’s Doubles title with Thanasi Kokkinakis. He later reached the finals of Wimbledon, where he lost to Novak Djokovic in four sets. However, his 2023 season has been marred with injuries. He had to withdraw from the Australian Open and Wimbledon at the very last minute owing to his struggles with injury. He is currently recovering from a wrist injury, and his next tournament could be the Canadian Open which will be held in August.
