Maria Sharapova refuses to call Carlos Alcaraz part of the ‘younger’ generation, comments on Ons Jabeur’s Grand Slams failures

Maria Sharapova, in a tennis podcast, discussed a variety of topics ranging from her own career to talking about the upcoming stars of this generation. In the podcast, she talked about how women’s tennis is in safe hands after Coco Gauff won in the US Open 2023. Sharapova also discussed the younger generation in the men’s category.

While talking about the upcoming players, she mentioned that she did not consider Carlos Alcaraz as a member of the younger generation. The five-time Grand Slam Champion stated, “I love seeing the younger generation, can’t even call [Carlos] Alcaraz younger generation because he’s already at the top, but there’s an aura about the men’s game that’s very evident.”

The former World No.1 also revealed how she is always rooting for Jannik Sinner because of his humble approach towards the game. The two shared the same coach at one point of time and Sharapova added how she got to hit a few balls with him.

Maria Sharapova talked about the status of men’s tennis. She mentioned, “They are all so different, they have different styles of play, different personalities, and they are from different parts of the world.“It’s just fun to see these rivalries come together. I think the men’s game is in a good state.” Maria Sharapova retired from tennis in early 2020 at the age of 33. She has always been known to speak her mind and is still active off the tennis court.

Maria Sharapova hopes that Ons Jabeur will win her first Grand Slam soon

The former World No.1 expressed her desire to see Ons Jabeur win her first Grand Slam title. Maria Sharapova added, “I’m rooting for Ons to win her first Grand Slam. She deserves that so much.” Ons Jabeur is the first Tunisian to win a WTA title as well. The Tunisian reached a career-high ranking of No.2 as per the WTA rankings but has not won a single slam yet, coming close to winning one 3 times.

Ons has had a challenging career so far having lost in 3 of the Grand Slam finals that she has reached. She lost 2 of the finals at Wimbledon and one of them at the US Open last year. The Tunisian has won 4 singles WTA titles so far in her career and is known for her aggressive style of play. However, given her mentality and fighting spirit, she is sure to hold the trophy of a major slam soon enough.
