French tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou recently made a very controversial remark, claiming that there is no historical connection between tennis and the Olympics and that winning a Grand Slam is 100 times more significant and important than winning an Olympic gold. The coach is currently being subjected to widespread ridicule and banter on social media for his comments.
Mouratoglou recently shared a very small part of one of his interviews on his Instagram account where he spoke about tennis at the Olympics. The French coach opined that as the Olympics take place every four years and do not have any impact on the rankings, the players do not feel much connected to the tournament and do not deem it important. Thus, many players prefer the Grand Slam events over the Olympics.
For the same reason, Novak Djokovic, who is deemed to be one of the best players in the history of the sport, does not have a gold medal in the Olympics. Djokovic won a bronze in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Roger Federer won an Olympic gold in doubles (2008 Olympics) and a silver in singles (2012 Olympics), while Rafael Nadal won an Olympic gold at the 2008 Olympics. Andy Murray is the only player to have won two gold medals in the Olympic tennis singles event. Even Alexander Zverev has an Olympic gold to his name (2020 Olympics).
Serena Williams, whom Patrick Mouratoglou used to coach in the past, has the highest number of Olympic gold medals in women’s tennis (4), alongside her sister Venus Williams, who also has a silver to her name. Thus, many fans are also of the opinion that Mouratoglou is downplaying the achievement of Serena in his recent statement.
Twitter reacts to Patrick Mouratoglou claiming the Olympic gold is of no significance in tennis
Fans have heavily criticized Patrick Mouratoglou for downplaying the Olympic gold in his recent statement. Many have gone to the extent of calling him a Novak Djokovic sycophant, meaning that he only said so because the Serbian has not won an Olympic gold yet.

Many fans pointed out that what makes the Olympics Gold in tennis so special is the fact that the tournament takes place every four years. Thus, the players do not have many opportunities in their careers to win an Olympic gold.
