Charles “do Bronx” Oliveira has become a household name with his impressive performance in the UFC’s lightweight division. The Brazilian had an okay run in the featherweight division but turned over a new leaf at a higher weight class.
Holder of numerous all-time UFC records, Oliveira will fight Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 300 for the number one contender spot. Preluding the fight at the coveted PPV, Oliveira had an emotional interview where he cried while explaining the meaning of his nickname.
A kid who came from nothing, from the bottom, from the favelas, disparaged. If God were to take me today, I would die very happy...For all that I have, for all that I provided my parents. That’s what “do Bronx” means to me...A kid that came from favelas to win.Charles Oliveira via ESPN MMA
The Portuguese term ‘do Bronx’ roughly translates to ‘from the streets.’ Oliveira is from the favelas, which is like a ghetto in Brazil. In addition to Oliveira, many other UFC fighters are also from the place. Alex Pereira, the UFC light heavyweight champion, is a notable example.
Oliveira is very close to his friends, family, and teammates. He has the faces of his parents and daughter tattooed on his chest. Once, his family even cut weight with him. Moreover, an entourage always accompanies him on fight weeks. Therefore, they have a strong, unbreakable bond.
Charles Oliveira reveals the ‘Queen’ of his whole life
Like many of the UFC fighters from Brazil, Charles Oliveira is a god-fearing family man. In his life, women have played an important role. It was the birth of his daughter that made Oliveira transform from a hit-and-miss fighter to an elite championship-level fighter.

Oliveira is not with the mother of his daughter but co-parents with the woman. Now, he has announced that his new girlfriend is pregnant with a boy. Nevertheless, as revealed in a recent interview, none of them remains the ‘Queen’ of his life.
My parents both had two jobs...My grandmother's been the queen of my whole life. I listen to her messages when I go fight wishing me good luck and crying.Charles Oliveira via ESPN MMA
Maria Pereira Da Silva is Oliveira’s grandmother. She raised Oliveira in a four-room apartment. After Oliveira’s success, he renovated the house where his grandmother lived for 50 years. ‘Do Bronx’ also revealed that whenever he closed his eyes, the house he lived in came to his mind.
Oliveira also stated that the rooms of the apartment being very close and congested, strengthened the family’s bond. A strong family connection and belief in god remains the strength of Oliveira’s life.
