Before the Fosun Group bought Wolverhampton Wanderers from Steve Morgan, the club was owned by Sir Jack Hayward. Sir Jack Hayward was a lifelong fan of Wolverhampton Wanderers. He had purchased the club in 1990 in a deal worth £2.1 million. However, Steve Morgan became the new owner of Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2007 when he bought the club for a nominal sum of £10. However, Steve Morgan had promised a £30 million investment in the club.

After nine seasons, Steve Morgan put the club for sale in 2016. During that time, Wolves were languishing at the bottom of the points table in the Championship. When Steve Morgan put the club for sale, the statement read:

“Wolverhampton Wanderers FC announces today that after eight eventful and enjoyable years at the club, and after much thought, owner and chairman Steve Morgan has decided to put his 100% shareholding in the club up for sale. Steve will step down from the board with immediate effect and day-to-day activities will continue to be managed by the chief executive with the current board overseeing operations. While the process of finding a new owner is being undertaken it is very much business as usual for the head coach, players, staff and all other stakeholders involved.”

The chairman of the Fosun International or Fosun Group, Guo Guangchang is valued at $6.8 billion according to Forbes. He was initially undervalued until the Fosun Group decided to sell one of their sister companies known as Ironshore to raise cash for its operations and other investment purposes. He also holds the stakes with an Indian pharmaceutical company known as Gland Pharma. His stakes in the Indian company are estimated at 7.4% and is looking to increase his stakes through further investments as well.

The fellow owner of the Wolverhampton Wanderers and co-founder of Fosun Group, Liang Xinjun is also a billionaire. The profits of the club, as well as the company, have gone down over the past two years due to the pandemic. However, they expect to invest more in the club once the situation gets back to normal.
