There are only a few names in the realm of football that carry as much weight as the legendary Tom Brady. Through his 23 seasons in the league, he amassed an unparalleled legacy filled with Super Bowl triumphs and record-breaking performances.
Yet, even legends are not immune to moments of regret and Brady recently found himself in an unexpected moment of embarrassment while recalling one of the biggest mistakes of his illustrious career. As he was tricked into contemplating the wrong call of making the Hail Mary pass in the final moments of the Super Bowl game that anyway ended in heartbreak.
During a sit-down interview with Sundae Conversations with Caleb Pressley, the seven-time Super Bowl champion found himself grappling with the haunting memory of a critical mistake that cost him the Super Bowl LII ring, that also serves as the upsetting reminder of letting down the expectations placed on him at crucial that moment.
The devastating loss of Super Bowl LII has been described as a “mental scar” by Brady, as he called it during his radio appearance on WEEI in 2019, revealing he still hasn’t moved on from it and it would serve as a reminder that he is acutely aware of the moments that slipped away and how they shaped his legacy.
The Eagles earned their first franchise Super Bowl title, which unmasked their underdog image, with a startling victory of 41-33 against Brady’s Patriots. Years later, the Eagles demonstrated their competitiveness after defeating another dominant dynasty, the Kansas City Chiefs, in Super Bowl LIX.
Tom Brady grilled on Super Bowl LII mistake in awkward interview
As the discussion unfolded, Caleb Pressley drew a Super Bowl scenario of the fourth quarter with nine seconds left, when the quarterback threw a Hail Mary pass which ended up being incompleted and he lost.
Without realizing that first, Brady dived into his competitive mindset and argued that a smarter play to aim a shorter gain could have been a more manageable final play instead of the Hail Mary pass with only nine seconds remaining in the game. But Pressley was not ready to let the winningest quarterback off the hook so easily, so he pressed again, “But he did.”

“He threw a Hail Mary! Well, hopefully, he can buy time to move out of the pocket and get a crow hopping,” replied Brady, to which the Pressly said again, “He didn’t… You think he should have?”
“I thought it was nine seconds left. I would try to get something short out of bounds to make the know the Hail Mary less far,” replied Brady, and suddenly he was starting to meet with reality.
“Why lying to us?” the former Barstool Sports personality confronted Brady, whose face was now turning pale and he managed to reply, “I’m not lying. I am telling you what a smart quarterback would do and a smart play-caller. You try to advance the ball to further downfield.”
“Patriots versus the Eagles!” emphazised Pressly, reminding Brady that it was indeed him, whom he was referencing earlier from the Super Bowl LII, where the underdog Eagles defeated the Patriots. “That was you! Tom, that was you!”

Faced with reality, the five-time Super Bowl MVP’s demeanor shifted and he tried to defend his disastrous mistake, claiming that he did not realize that he was throwing a Hail Mary because if he had, he “could reach the end zone.” In the end, the legendary former quarterback was left with no option but to make the simple acknowledgment of his mistake with an awkward laugh.
