Pat McAfee is like the neighborhood’s head honcho, with whom one can go have a chat and smoke a couple of blunts. He takes a few puffs and then passes it around like it’s a ceremonial sake to pledge their undying allegiance to the brotherhood. Mike McCarthy, on the other hand, prefers to keep profession and pleasure separate.

Everyone knew McAfee would be at Green Bay, covering the NFL draft. His crew set up shop just outside of the podium, where Rodger Goodell would stand and announce the names of the players.

McCarthy was a surprising inclusion on his bandwagon. He parted ways with the Dallas Cowboys earlier this year after finishing the 2024 season with just seven wins.

McAfee couldn’t recruit Eli Manning or Bill Belichick, so McCarthy made his debut on the roster.

During a short break, someone handed McAfee a blunt of weed. He took a puff and extended the blunt to McCarthy, who was about to sit down on his seat. McCarthy waved his hand to say no, and the former Indianapolis Colts punter threw it away.

The Cowboys owned the 12th overall pick on day one of the draft. Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones took Alabama’s offensive lineman Tyler Booker. Although Micah Parsons was surprised by the choice, McCarthy felt it was the right move for the Cowboys.

If you had asked me who’d we [Cowboys] be picking this is the way I think we’d go. It’s an offensive line that is better today than it was this point last year because they had five young offensive linemen play a ton of football. Now, you’re adding Tyler. I think you’re hopefully getting back to the good old days in Dallas.

Mike McCarthy explained

Booker became the third offensive lineman the Cowboys have drafted in the last three years. Tyler Smith in 2022 and Tyler Guyton in 2023.

Does Mike McCarthy resent the Cowboys?

2024 may have ended in a 7-10 record for the Cowboys, but McCarthy was still the favorite to remain as their head coach. A contract from Jerry Jones was on the table, but McCarthy didn’t like the number in the year’s column. Jones didn’t take long to say goodbye to McCarthy for good.

McAfee asked the 61-year-old coach if he resented the Cowboys for firing him.

No, not at all. I loved my time in Dallas. I’m actually getting to enjoy the city the last couple of months. Great city. Phenomenal organization. Cannot say enough about Jerry and Eugenia and the Jones family… I’m a better man today than I was when I went to Dallas.

McCarty also raved about his former team, the Green Bay Packers, selecting Texas wide receiver Matthew Golden at 23rd overall.

Don’t be surprised if [Matthew Golden] was the highest rated guy on their board. This is a win-win right here. You’ve got a very highly rated wide receiver at the right time and obviously it gives them a huge boost to their offense.

Mike McCarthy said

McCarthy spent 13 seasons with the Packers (2006-2018). He lifted the Lombardi Trophy with Aaron Rodgers as his quarterback in 2010.

Jones appointed McCarthy in 2020. He recorded three consecutive 12-5 seasons before last year’s slump after quarterback Dak Prescott injured himself. He has managed 288 games in the NFL, winning 174 times and losing 112 times, and twice the game was inconclusive/a draw. McCarthy has a win percentage of .608 in his close to two-decade-long career.

No team showed interest in hiring him despite his pedigree as a coach. However, the NFL is a very fluid sport. Anything can happen during the season.
