How do you gauge an athlete’s true passion toward his sport? Is it the countless hours spent honing his craft or their contribution to their sport? In the case of Shedeur Sanders, his love for football can be compared to the effect an intoxicating substance has on the masses.

The young athlete is groomed differently. Despite belonging to a generation that normalizes the consumption of alcohol and other intoxicating substances, Shedeur Sanders has no interest in following that path. The 144th overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft revealed his preference for sobriety on the 2 Legendary Podcast.

The recent addition to the Cleveland Browns quarterback room faced an unexpected setback in the draft. His fall from grace, from a surefire first-round pick to a fifth-round pick, is unprecedented in NFL history. While this has made the fire within him burn brighter, to prove himself to the league and all his critics, Sanders’ latest revelation has proved that he will be a good role model to the fans and a personality with great character.

Being brought up in the Sanders household, it comes as no surprise that Shedeur was raised to be a god-loving individual. In addition to this, he was taught values such as humility and to resort to earning his place and not expect to be given anything. Deion Sanders, despite his strict parenting, gave his sons the freedom to live, including to party and drink, but if they ever crossed a line, he knew how to keep them in check.

Shedeur Sanders revealed that despite this freedom, he does not consume alcohol because his drug of choice is football.

I don’t drink. I don’t do that kind of stuff. It’s not like too much I couldn’t do. Dad gave us the freedom to do what we wanted to do to bump our heads a little bit when we were younger to get back on the track.

The statement is laudable because there are a handful of individuals in the NFL who can boast of the game being their drug of choice.

It is no dig at those who enjoy a drink or two and party occasionally. However, Shedeur’s decision to abstain from it, even though his father would not object to him consuming it on occasion, is worthy of praise. He celebrates his birthdays in a low-key fashion, too. Birthdays are the day when people look forward to partying, and alcohol is a staple; however, for Shedeur, he celebrates his day by spending time with his loved ones and having a hearty meal.

It is interesting to hear this side of Sanders, as he has gained a negative rep for his confidence. His fall in the draft is being attributed to the NFL ownership teaching him a lesson. Irrespective of the draft day outcome, Shedeur Sanders remains unfazed. He finds himself in a packed locker room alongside Deshaun Watson, Dillon Gabriel, and veteran Joe Flacco.

Sanders has a great opportunity. He can learn from a Super Bowl-winning quarterback in Flacco and prove that he is better than those drafted ahead of him. If there is one thing, Shedeur’s character will not be an issue in his professional career.
