Almost every football fan has a theory about the New York Giants not drafting Shedeur Sanders, even though at one point, he seemed destined to be the heir apparent to Eli Manning in the Big Apple. Social media and various analysts connected Sanders to the Giants after everyone witnessed the chemistry between the Colorado U graduate and head coach Brian Daboll at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Even though Sanders didn’t take part in the Combine, the Giants were the odds-on favorites to draft him at third overall.

A couple of Giants representatives flew to Colorado for the Buffaloes’ pro day. Sanders wowed the internet with his inch-perfect throws while Travis Hunter caught passes without wearing gloves.

Former NFL quarterback turned analyst Robert Griffin III loved Sanders’ mechanics.

Shedeur Sanders with a beautifully placed deep ball off of play action. This is the perfect combination of air and distance on the throw with accuracy over the outside shoulder. He can throw the deep ball in the NFL and he understands ball placement. Stop the hate. Watch the tape.

RG3 had tweeted

I just think he throws a really catchable ball. Accuracy is one thing, but catch-ability is another. Shedeur’s got both. And watching him live today, there was more power — more velocity — than I expected.

An NFL executive told Jordan Schultz that they were impressed by Shedeur’s accuracy

Sanders requested the NFL teams to give him a chance to showcase his talent.

All I need is an opportunity. Simple. Whatever franchise wanna change they franchise, then it’s no doubt who to go with… You’ll be a fool not to pick me.

A couple of days before the draft, the Giants invited several rookies for a private workout at their facility, including Shedeur Sanders.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer recently reported that Sanders was ‘pissed’ by the test from Daboll. Breer said Daboll gave the rookies a playbook containing strategically inserted mistakes.

The Giants one, they give players an install, and there are mistakes intentionally put in the install. He didn’t catch them and got called on it… He was pissed that they did that to him.

Albert Breer of SI said on 98.5 The Sports Hub

Daboll didn’t mention any of this when asked about the reason behind drafting Jaxson Dart over Sanders.

We had good meetings with all the guys that came in here on 30 visits… We met with some quarterbacks down there. We met with a variety of people, and you’re able to get some guys ahead of, say, the Combine and see them do some different things, and he did a nice job there with some of the things that they asked him to do. So, it’s a very helpful part of the process… [Those] meetings were productive, and we’re happy with [our quarterback] Jaxson [Dart].

Brian Daboll said

However, Breer’s report sounds eerily similar to that of Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network.

The worst formal interview I’ve ever been in in my life. He’s so entitled. He takes unnecessary sacks. He never plays on time. He has horrible body language. He blames teammates, but the biggest thing is, he’s not that good.

an anonymous NFL executive told Pelissero

It’s slowly becoming clear that the Giants ditched the idea of drafting Sanders after the pre-draft visit. Dart became their favorite. Daboll was acquainted with Dart through his daughter, who attends the University of Mississippi.

Sanders ended up going to the Cleveland Browns at 144th overall. Despite the slide, he has received backing from some of the biggest names in football.

Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon urged the rookie to work hard and prove himself. Three-time Super Bowl-winning tight end Travis Kelce claimed that the Browns fans lucked out by drafting Sanders. Only time will tell how Sanders handles the pressure and accomplishes his dream of becoming a Super Bowl champ.
