Canelo Alvarez returned to the boxing ring last night to defend his super-middleweight titles against challenger William Scull in Riyadh. After twelve rounds, the Mexican champion took home the victory via unanimous decision from all three ringside boxing judges present. However, it wasn’t an entertaining bout at all, with fans expressing frustration over the lack of action and drama.

Terence Crawford, the light middleweight champion, was in attendance to watch the fight from his seat. However, his reaction was a true testament to his lack of interest in the fight, clearly bored and unimpressed. Throughout the fight, both fighters focused on defense and didn’t participate in many exchanges, leaving the crowd feeling underwhelmed.

The fight set a record for the fewest punches thrown in a 12-round bout, totaling just 445 combined punches. Alvarez landed only 56 punches from 152 thrown, while Scull connected with 55 out of his 293 attempts total. Fans labeled the bout “pure trash,” disappointed by Scull’s overly defensive approach despite being the challenger.

On the other hand, Alvarez lacked urgency, surprising fans who expect more intensity from boxing’s pound-for-pound number one champion. The only exciting moment came after the fight ended, when Terence Crawford entered the ring for a dramatic faceoff with Alvarez. Turki Alalshikh officially announced the super fight, scheduled for September 12 at Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas.

Following the bout, Canelo Alvarez admitted that the fight was not up to the mark and didn’t enjoy fighting William Scull. He slammed the challenger for running around the whole fight and not exchanging out of fear of getting knocked out. It was Alvarez’s sixth consecutive win and undisputed super middleweight title defence, making his upcoming fight with Terence Crawford more interesting.

Both fighters had been talking about the fight for a long time, and Alvarez was initially uninterested in participating. However, things have changed now, and they will fight in UFC CEO Dana White‘s inauguration boxing event. Nevertheless, here are some reactions from Alvarez’s latest fight against William Scull.

As expected, fans were disappointed and didn’t shy away from roasting both fighters for a lackluster event. Many roasted boxing as a whole for being boring and lacking entertaining bouts and highlight reel finishes.
