The NFL has released the full regular season schedule for the 2025-26 season. Week one has several interesting fixtures, including the Chiefs taking on the Chargers in Brazil. However, the game that will kick off the next campaign is between NFC East rivals the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys.

On paper, the Eagles-Cowboys is a massive fixture. The Eagles are the defending Super Bowl champions, whereas the Cowboys are the “America’s Team” entering a new era with Brian Schottenheimer.

Colin Cowherd, on the other hand, is fed up with seeing the Cowboys hog the primetime TV slots. The FOX Sports analyst is part of the bandwagon that no longer believes that Jerry Jones’ team should be called ‘America’s Team,’ let alone the spotlight each year.

The idea that Dallas has earned that spot. It’s Lakers on Christmas. Who cares? Remember Apple inserted the U2 album on your iPod, and you didn’t want it, and you couldn’t get rid of it? That’s what I feel about the Cowboys.

Cowboys games bring massive views for TV networks

The Cowboys may be the most hated team in the NFL, mostly because of their fan base. Veteran ESPN contributor Stephen A. Smith, in an interview, made his thoughts clear.

[The Cowboys have a] disgusting, nauseating fan base, which I can’t stand. That’s who they are. For me, I have nothing against any player on the Cowboys. It’s their damn fans that get on my nerves.

However, there’s a silver lining. Fans tend to enjoy seeing teams they don’t like. The Cowboys have hovered near the top of the NFC East a couple of times in the near past, but they falter whenever the stakes are high.

Last season, the Cowboys finished with a 7-10 record after quarterback Dak Prescott missed the second half of the campaign because of injury. They played the Eagles twice, and on both occasions lost by a margin of 32+ points while they put up a total of 13 in reply.

Despite the poor results, the Cowboys were amongst the most-watched NFL teams, only behind the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, and Detroit Lions.

Front Office Sports reported that the late afternoon Thanksgiving game between the Cowboys and divisional rivals the New York Giants drew a final average of 38.8 million views. It was the most watched NFL game of the season and the second most viewed Thanksgiving game ever. The 2022 fixture between the two teams drew a staggering final average of 42.1 million views.

Regardless of what kind of position the Cowboys are in, the NFL knows that Jerry’s team will bring in viewers. That’s one of the reasons behind the Cowboys bagging six primetime games in the 2025-26 season. From week eight to week 15, the Cowboys will play in a primetime TV slot (excluding the week 10 BYE).
